In November the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra is giving a one night only performance at Carnegie Hall. The November 3 performance will be the Orchestra’s American debut.
Orchestra founder and artistic director Dionysis Grammenos spoke on the program saying they will present, “an eclectic evening of music including contemporary European and American popular symphonic works; as well as, a fresh new take on traditional Greek dance music through a symphonic lens.”
The program features:
“<<rewind<<” by Anna Clyne
“Greek Dances” by Nikos Skalkottas
“Symphonic Dances from West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein
Grammenos continued, “we could not be more excited that Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra will make it American debut at Carnegie Hall this fall. Just about 70 years ago to the date of our concert, the great Greek conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos led the New York Philharmonic in the debut of Nikos Skalkottas’ “Greek Dances” on the state of Carnegie Hall. Our performance of this work feels like a celebration of the legacy of Greek music and artistry to have played this fabled stage.”
Grammenos created the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2017 and 300 musicians ranging from 18 to 26 years of age. Along with the musicians from some 50 cities around Greece, the Orchestra also has musicians from all over Europe.
Tickets begin at $48 ($39 + $9 fee).
