Like many of the artists in Nashville, Morgan Wallen is opening an establishment; but he is learning that his past actions and behaviour have consequences.
Called “Morgan Wallen’s This Bar and Tennessee Kitchen”, Wallen had to get permission from the Nashville Metro Council to erect a sign in front of the establishment that would hang above the sidewalk.
Citing his previous issues of a racial slur in 2021 and the most recent of throwing a chair from a roof, the Council voted 30 to three to deny Wallen the sign.
During the debating session, the Council members used words like harmful actions and hateful comments. Council member Delishia Porterfield said, “I don’t want to see a billboard up with the name of a person who is throwing chairs off of balconies and who is saying racial slurs.”
Jacob Kupin, the Councilmember who presented the proposal noted that the TC Restaurant Group will be managing the Bar; adding that they have been good partners who have worked to make Nashville safer.
On April 7, Wallen allegedly threw a chair from the six story roof of a building and laughed as it landed only a few feet from two law enforcement officers. Originally postponed, Wallen has a hearing on the case August 15.
In 2021, Wallen was suspended indefinitely by his record label when a video of him using a racial slur surfaced.
Despite his questionable behaviour, Wallen’s album “One Thing at a Time” sat atop the Billboard 200 Album chart for 16 weeks last year.
Wallen’s bar sign is not the first time the Council has had an issue with a sign. In 2019, Kid Rock had sign that included a guitar that morphed into the shape of a female’s behind. In the end the Council approved the sign.
