In less than a month, Broadway will celebrate its biggest night with the presentation of the Tony Awards – the T in EGOT – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar (Academy Award), and Tony.

Throughout the 60 plus years of the various awards, only 19 people have earned an EGOT – the most recent just last year.

Composer Richard Rodgers was the first person to earn an EGOT.  He earned his first award in 1945 with the Oscar, then came his first of four Tony Awards in 1950, next came the first of two Grammy Awards in 1960.  The big year was 1962 when Rodgers earned a Grammy, a Tony, and his Emmy to complete the EGOT.

Helen Hayes began her journey to EGPT status in 1932 with an Oscar – her first of two, two Tonys, an Emmy, and earned the EGOT with her Grammy Award in 1977.

Rita Moreno earned her first of the awards with an Oscar in 1962 for “West Side Story”, then came the Grammy and Tony Awards.  She completed the cycle in 1977 with her first of two Emmy Awards.

Audrey Hepburn began her journey in 1954 with an Oscar and a Tony.  She would have to wait 39 years to earn her Emmy and in 1994, she completed the list with a Grammy Award.

Known for films like “Blazing Saddles” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”, Mel Brooks began with the first of his three Emmy Awards in 1967, next came the Oscar for “The Producers” in 1969.  His first of two Grammys came in 1998, and in 2001, he earned his Tony for “The Producers” – a show that earned 12 Tonys.

Eight time tony Award winner Mike Nichols began his journey in 1961 with a Grammy Award.  He would have to wait until 2001 to earn his EGOT when he won the first of his two Emmys.

Comedian and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg first earned her Grammy Award in 1986, then came the Oscar in 1990 for her role in “Ghost”.  She completed the list with a Tony and the first of her two Emmy Awards in 2002.

Songwriter Robert Lopez began his EGOT journey with a Tony in 2004; then came the Emmy, Grammy, and finally the Oscar to complete the list of awards.  Lopez has earned two of each of the awards.

Singer and songwriter John Legend began his EGOT journey with the first of six Grammy Awards in 2006.  He needed only four years to complete his EGOT from 2015  to 2018 with the Oscar, Tony, and Emmy.

Sir John Gielgud began his EGOT journey in 1948 with the first of his two Tony Awards. It took until 1991 for him to complete the EGOT with an Emmy Award.

Composer Marvin Hamlisch earned his Oscar Award in 1973 for “The Way We Were” and his Grammy for the same film in 1974.  The Tony Award came in 1976 for “A Chorus Line” and completed the EGOT status in 1995 with the first of his three Emmy Awards as musical director for Barbra Streisand.

It took composer Jonathan Tunick just 20 years to earn all four trophies for EGOT status; he began in 1977 with an Oscar for “A Little Night Music”.  Then came the Emmy and Grammy before earning the Tony in 1997 for “Titanic”.

Scott Rudin earned his first award in 1984 for a children’s program.  Ten years later he won the first of his 17 Tony Awards; then came the Oscar.  He earned his EGOT status in 2012 with a Grammy for “The Book of Mormon”.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s EGOT journey began in 1980 with the first of three Grammys and the first of four Tonys. His Oscar came in 1997 and he completed his EGOT status in 2018 with an Emmy Award for a live performance of “Jesus Chris Superstar”.

Lord Andrew’s musical partner Tim Rice’s journey to EGOT status mirrors that of Webber with Grammy, Tony, Oscar, and Emmys.

Alan Menken’s EGOT journey began in 1989 with the first of his four Oscars.  He also earned five Grammys, a Tony, and completed the status in 2020 with the Emmy Award.

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson took the world by storm with the debut performance in “Dreamgirls” which earned her a BAFTA and an Oscar.  She went on to earn two Grammys, an Emmy, and earned her EGOT status with a Tony.

Actress Viola Davis earned her first of two Tony Awards in 2001; then came the Oscar, an Emmy, and completed her EGOT status in 2023 with a Grammy as the narrator on an audio book. 

Surprisingly with his long list of awards on both sides of the Atlantic, Sir Elton John is the newest member of the EGOT Club.  It began with his first of five Grammy Awards in 1987, then came the Oscar and the Tony.  He earned his EGOT status earlier this year with the Emmy for the live presentation of his performance at Dodger Stadium.
