What is one word that describes you?

I’m not sure I can pick just one word to describe myself. I leave such things to others…and the list has been long; depending on who you ask.

But, the one thing I can say is that I try very hard to follow what is often called the “Golden Rule”; but not the one found in the New Testament of the “Bible”, the original version of said rule.

In college I took a Biblical Hebrew class which included an introduction to Aramaic – the language before Hebrew. Included in that introduction was a story about a man – a pagan – who came to Rabbi Gamliel and said, “I will convert if you can teach me all there is to know while I stand on one foot.” Rabbi Gamliel sent the man away.

Undaunted, the pagan went to Rabbi Hillel and again said, “I will convert if you can teach me all there is to know while I stand on one foot.”

Rabbi Hillel responded by saying, “that which is harmful to you, do not to others! All else is commentary. Go forth and study.”

I try very hard to remember that when encountering others and try to treat them the way I wish someone would treat me. I try to be helpful, considerate, and courteous whenever possible. Please and thank you are a big part of my vocabulary. As my Grandma used to say, it doesn’t cost anything to be nice. When I was a kid it wasn’t called bullying; it was called kids being kids; but it is still cruel and uncalled for.
