Theater goers have seen several productions close early so far this year.
“Sweeney Todd” has recently announced that it too will be closing in May, but this is not an early closing; in fact, the show was extended past its original close date by over two months.
“Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street” opened with previews on February 26, 2023 starring award-winning artist Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford.
Originally, plans were for the show to close when Groban and Ashford departed last month; however, after Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit replaced the departing Ashford and Groban, the show continued and is now set for a May 5 closing.
The revival of “Sweeney Todd” earned two awards at the 2023 Tony Awards. After 27 previews, the show will have had 399 performances when it closes.
A rarity on Broadway today, “Sweeney Todd” featured a 26 piece orchestra.
