It was a good week for Broadway with half of the shows joining the Million Dollar Club and three-fourths of the shows having at least 90 percent audience capacity. Bucking a recent trend, Broadway saw an increase of nearly five percent last week with over 200,000 people attending shows.
Consistently in the top five of the Million Dollar Club, “Wicked” took the top spot this week after several new cast members joined the production and theater fans were anxious to check out the new actors and brought in a box office draw of $1.84 million this last week.
“Hamilton”, “The Lion King”, “Merrily We Roll Along”, and “Sweeney Todd” rounded out the top five. With the announcement of “Sweeney Todd’s” eminent closing later in the spring, the numbers are sure to go up.
With the addition of “Dancing with the Stars” alum Ariana Madix, “Chicago” had its best non-holiday showing in the revival’s history, falling just short of the Million Dollar Club.
The newest addition to the Broadway fare was a revival of the musical “Tommy” by the rock band The Who. After only two previews brought in $345,129! If those numbers continue, it will easily be a part of the Million Dollar Club.
