It was a big weekend in the world of basketball when not one but TWO big scoring records were broken.

Known for her half-court baskets; it was a free throw that put Iowa basketball player Caitlin Clark in the record books as the all time scoring leader in the NCAA Division I.

Clark broke a 54-year old record formerly held by Pete Maravich during a game between Iowa and Ohio State that saw the number six Iowa team win 93-83.

When Iowa took the court on March 3, Clark needed just 18 points in order to pass Maravich’s record of 3,667 points.  By the end of the game, Clark had scored a total of 35 points to bring her total to 3,685 points.  Maravich set the record in an era where the three point shot did not exist.

With her mind on the game itself, Clark said that she did not realize she had broken the scoring record until after it had been announced.

When Clark entered the game against Ohio State, she had earned the title as leading women’s scorer after breaking the record haled by Lynette Woodard just four days prior.

Records are made to be broken; and with that in mind Clark noted, “just to be in the same realm of all these players who have been so successful, whether it’s Pete or Kelsey Plum or Lynette Woodard — all these people have just given so much to the game.  Hopefully somebody comes after me and breaks my records and I can be there supporting them.”

In her senior year at Iowa, Clark has announced that she will be entering the WNBA draft this year and not taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility in college.

The overall NCAA record is held by Pearl Moore who played for Francis Marion – a small AIAW school – with 4,061 points over a five year period.

With 376 points behind the over record, Clark has a chance to break that one as well if she and her fellow Iowa basketball mates can stay alive in the post season.

Hours before Caitlin Clark set a new scoring record, Los Angeles Laker LeBron James reached the mountain top of scoring when he hit 40,000 career points!  James is in his 21st season as a professional basketball player.

James set the record despite the Lakers losing 124-114 to the Denver Nuggets.

James spoke on his historic event saying, “being the first player to do something, it’s pretty cool in this league, just knowing the history, the greats that’s come through the league, and then you see some of the greats on the floor tonight, it was great to compete. But for me, the main thing, as always, is to win, and I hated that it had to happen in a defeat.”

It took 1,475 regular season games plus several post season games ( over three seasons worth) for James to reach the 40,000 point mark.

James broke the previous scoring record of 38,387 points set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on February 7, 2023 in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The big question is whether or not James will stick around long enough to reach the 50,000 point mark???
