The NFL season has concluded with the annual Super Bowl and now it is time to turn sporting attentions to racing.
Just a little over a week ago, NASCAR held their annual Busch Light Clash – an exhibition race – at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. Now back on the east coast, the drivers begin to descend on Daytona International Speedway for the beginning of Speedweek that will culminate in the Daytona 500.
There will be a full field of 40 drivers for the 2024 500 on February 18. NASCAR has released the entry list with 42 drivers entered. Two of those drivers will not make the race. With 36 charters, those drivers are guaranteed a starting spot in the race; leaving only four more spots in the lineup.
On Tuesday the qualifying order for single car qualifying will be determined by a random draw. After all 42 cars have made a qualifying run, the top 10 drivers will move on to round two to determine the front row and pole.
The qualifying run will also determine the starting order for the two BlueGreen Vacation Duel Races with the odd number drivers in Duel one and the even number drivers in Duel two. The finishing order in race one will determine the inside row for the 500 and the even numbers will set the outside row.
Among the six drivers that will have time their way into the race is seven time Cup Series champion and co-owner of Legacy Motor Club Jimmie Johnson.
The NY Racing Team has yet to name a driver for their number 44 entry into the race.
The two drivers that are not already guaranteed a starting spot in the race will earn their way in after qualifying as the fastest times for an unchartered team.
The final two spots will be determined at the end of the Duel races with the highest placing non-chartered driver from each race.
Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is like none other with a qualifying run to set the front row and two dual races to set the remainder of the field. When the qualifying begins on Wednesday, it will be the start of five days of racing at Daytona that will include the ARCA, Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series, and the Cup Series.
