Do I spend more time thinking about the past or the future??? I guess I have never really thought about it. With everything that has happened over the past few years, it is a little difficult to think about how the future may look.
An admitted “Star Trek” fan, it would be nice to think that Earth has such a future, but with current events as they are, I have my doubts.
In school, I didn’t really care for history because it seemed all we did was memorize laws and dates – blah…no fun there! But since I learned some of my family’s own history, I have been interested in what roles they played and even look for familiar names sometimes when I am reading.
But I guess in a general sense, since I am an independent journalist, a lot of my work writing about music, entertainment, and sports; I spend more time looking at the past – albeit the very near past. Whether it be a recap of a recent event or an obituary, they are all events in the past.
But, all in all, we as humans need to be mindful of the past – “those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it” -; after all, it is the past that will help to determine our future. They are building a new football stadium in Buffalo across the street from the current one and in the commercial about the stadium they say that fans should cherish the memories made in the old stadium while looking toward a bright future in the new one.
My Dad has Alzheimer’s; the future is non-existent for him. When we talk, we talk about the past – the things he remembers. A musician who no longer plays because he doesn’t understand he can still play and the person I grew up watching sports with; those are the thing we talk about most. I may tell him what I am doing, but he doesn’t remember it. For him, there is only the past…a place he knows well.
