This year the NFL saw its first games in Garmany; making the country the third location outside of the United States to host a game of American football; joining London, England and Mexico City, Mexico.

The 2024 NFL season will see another game played outside the U.S. when the American version of football travels to South America for a game in Sao Paulo, Brazil; beating out the Spanish capital of Madrid.

NFL executive vice president of club business, international and league events Peter O’Reilly spoke on the expansion of non-U.S. regular season games saying, “the good news is both – Sao Paulo and Madrid – are really viable and interested in hosting games.  Pending having the opportunity to play in Madrid and Brazil in the future, we would be excited to do that. The reason we went first with Brazil really ties to going to a new continent for the first time, into South America for the first time for the regular season.”

On December 13, the 32 NFL owners voted to have each of the teams compete in an international game every four years.  The resolution has the possibility of a total of eight international games each season sometime in the near future.

The Jacksonville Jaguars – who played two games back to back in London this year – has a separate contract to play in Wembley Stadium and isn’t counted toward the NFL total.

In 2024, the NFL is set to play games in London at Tottenham Hotspur and Wembley Stadium, a game in Munich, and a game in Sao Paulo.

Currently the European games are played at 9:30 in the morning due to the time zones, but Sao Paulo has a time difference of just one hour during Daylight Savings Time and two hours during Standard Time; which will result in the games more than likely to be a part of the usual lineup.  Brazil is in the Atlantic time zone which is just east of the eastern time zone in the U.S.

According to the NFL, there are some 38 million fans of the NFL in Brazil and counting.  The game will more than likely be played in the 49,000 seat Corinthians Arena; which has already hosted World Cup and Olympic events.

The speculation is that Madrid will be the next international city to host an NFL game and games in Mexico City will resume once renovations to the stadium are computed.
