What TV shows did you watch as a kid?
I grew up watching football and baseball with my Dad. But I also remember watching “Star Trek” – the original one – and Mission Impossible” with him.
And I am a fan of them all to this day.
Saturday mornings meant piano lessons and watching cartoons with the sound turned down, but that didn’t squelch a joy of watching Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, the Roadrunner, and Wiley Coyote. But best of all was “The Pink Panther” because there was. no dialogue to miss.
In the fall, Saturday afternoons were for college football when the broadcast wasn’t filled with talking heads and they actually showed the bands at halftime. in those days, there was no cable tv and you had just three channels to choose from…and a football game on every one. My Dad could switch channels and keep track of what was happening in all three of them and maybe another one on the radio!
Sports broadcasts today are much more technical than they were 50 years ago but growing up watching the games I have learned a great deal and can keep track of events. I even learned how to score a baseball game…a skill that came in handy in collage sitting in the stands of Dick Howser Stadium with “The Animals of Section B”.
TV has changed considerably…and not necessarily for the better. Much can be said for the old shows that concentrated on a story line and not blood, gore, and scantily clad actors.
