Front Row Motorsports driver Michael McDowell only has two career wins in the NASCAR Cup Series; but, they are wins at two of the most iconic tracks in racing – Daytona International Speedway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
With his win of the Verizon 200 on August 13 on the road course at IMS, McDowell joined a very select group of drivers that includes two of the seven time Cup Series champions and the man who started the tradition of kissing the bricks after a win.
Of the only nine drivers to win the Daytona 500/Indianapolis double, McDowell is the first driver to do so on the Indy road course.
McDowell’s Daytona 500 win came in 2021 while Covid protocols were still in force and there were no fans in the stands. This time around, he had has whole family around him to celebrate.
Jaime McMurray won the 500 and the Indy race both in the same year – 2010.
Seven time champion Jimmie Johnson has two Daytona 500 wins and four wins at Indianapolis.
Ryan Newman has one win each in the Dayton 500 and at Indy with the wins coming five years apart.
Dale Jarrett has three Daytona 500 wins – one with his father Ned calling the race and two wins at Indianapolis. Drivers are always looking for new ways to celebrate at win and in 1996 – his first win at Indy – Jarrett gathered the crew and took them down on the track to the “yard of bricks” where they “kissed the brick”…and a tradition was born.
Retiring at the end of the season, Kevin Harvick has just one win in the Daytona 500 but he has won at Indianapolis three times. His final Indy win was during the Covid pandemic in 2020.
Chase Elliott fell just a little short on Sunday after coming in second; but his Dad, Bill Elliott has won the Daytona 500 twice and has a win at Indianapolis.
It took seven time Cup champion Dale Earnhardt Sr 20 tries to win the Daytona 500; three years after winning the race on the oval at Indianapolis.
The king of Indianapolis wins is four time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon who has won five races at Indy – including the first race on the iconic track. He has three Daytona 500 wins to go with it.
