Gloria Estefan came to the United States from Cuba when she was just five years old; but she has never left her Latin music roots. Since forming the Miami Sound Machine with husband Emilio; Estefan has earned eight Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honours, has sold over 100 million albums around the world, and is a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. She can now add a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame to her list of accomplishments.
With her induction into the Hall of Fame, Estefan becomes the first Latina to earn such an honour; she was also the first Latina to win the Kennedy Center Honours.
Making music for over 40 years, Estefan was joined on stage by her husband and eleven year old grandson Sasha for her performance at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremonies on June 15 in New York City that had the audience on their feet and dancing.
Thanks to Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, artists like Ricky Martin, Selena, Shakira, and Jennifer Lopez have all seen major musical success performing music in both English and Spanish.
During her induction into The Hall, Estefan said, “to those fans that have found in my music what I found in the music of the life-changing songwriters that nourished my soul throughout my life, I thank you for that privilege. And I can assure you that it is just as magical from the other side of the song.”
