On April 8, Rick Ware Racing announced that driver of the number 51 car Cody Ware would be stepping away from the car for the dirt race at Bristol in order to deal with a “personal matter”. Craftsman Truck Series driver Matt Crafton took over the driving duties for the number 51 car at Bristol.
After the initial announcement, conflicting reports appeared on social media with some saying that Ware had been removed from the car and others saying that Ware had stepped away from the car.
On April 10, NASCAR announced that Ware had been suspended indefinitely.
The Iredell Country, North Carolina Sheriff’s Office has arrested Ware on suspicion of “assault by strangulation” with intent to “inflict serious injury”, and “assault on a female”.
Bond has been set for $3,000.
Ware, the son of Rick Ware Racing owner Rick Ware, has been driving in the Cup Series since 2017 and has been a part of 97 races with his best finish being sixth place at Daytona International Speedway.
In the past, the 27 year old Cody Ware has commented on social media that he is dealing with depression and anxiety. He also stated that he has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome – a form of autism.
