Even before the Cup Series cars made it to the inspection line, the racing paddock was filled with drama.  While the drivers in the Xfinity Series were making their qualifying runs, FOX Sports revealed that Chase Elliott had been injured while snowboarding in Colorado and would be in the car for the Penzoil 00 on Sunday.  JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry would be filling in for Elliott on Sunday.

It has since been revealed that Elliott broke the tibia in his left leg and had surgery on Friday night.  Car owner Hendrick Motorsports announced that there is currently no timetable for Elliott’s return to the track.

After his first time in a Next Gen car, Josh Berry said that he had fun; adding that he is happy to be here.

During practice, Harrison Bruton hit the wall hard and did significant damage to the car after the temperatures spiked and leaked liquid on to the tires.  Burton walked away from the incident and walked to the ambulance for the mandatory trip to the infield care center.

Thirty-six teams brought car to the track for the second race in the west coast swing.

Harrison Burton has been checked and released from the infield care center.  He said that he saw the water temp spike and the next thing he knew, he was in the wall.  Car owner The Wood Brothers did not bring a backup car; the crew will have to try and repair the car.

After the two group practices, Bubba Wallace leads Group B and Kyle Larson leads in Group A; as well as, overall.

The first driver on the track in Group A to make a qualifying run is Ryan Preece and posts a time of 30.03 seconds.

After each group makes a qualifying run, the top five drivers from each group will move on to round two to determine who will sit on the pole for tomorrow’s race.

After Group A made their qualifying run; Joey Logano, William Byron, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, and Kyle Larson will all move on to round two.

In Group B; Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, Ty Gibbs, and Ross Chastain will all move on to round two.

Tyler Reddick and BJ McLeod did not make a qualifying run.  After crashing into the wall, Harrison Burton did not make a qualifying run.

First out on the track for round two of qualifying is Ryan Blaney who posted a time of 29.20 seconds.

With a qualifying time of 29.02 seconds, Joey Logano puts his number 22 car on the pole and will bring the field to green.  William Byron will start alongside Logano on the front row.

Reports from The Wood Brothers on the 21 car crash, a lug nut from the Xfinity Series got into the engine and punched a hole in the radiator.

This week Danica Patrick joins Mike Joy and Clint Bowyer in the FOX Sports broadcast booth.  MLB star and Las Vegas native Bryce Harper will give the command to start the engines.

Stage one of the race is 80 laps, stage two of the race is 85 laps, and stage three lasting 102 laps for a total of 267 laps round the mile and a half track.  The drivers can run around 60 laps on a single load of fuel and will have to make a fuel stop in every stage.

On a cool and windy afternoon, Joey Logano brings the field down for the green flag start of the race from the inside lane and gets out in front after a push from Ryan Blaney.  Joey Logano leads lap one.

Lap four, Joey Logano leads there ace with William Byron in second; Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Ross Chastain round out the top five.

Ty Gibbs is holding up a pack of drivers allowing the top six to pull away.

Lap six, Joey Logano has a tenth of a second lead on William Byron; Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney, and Ross Chastain round out the top five.

Lap eight, Ross Chastain passes Ryan Blaney for fourth; with Joey Logano leading the race.

Lap nine, the top three drivers are nose to tail with Joey Logno leading but William Byron comes up on the inside to battle for the lead.

Lap 10, William Byron takes the lead with Joey Logano in second; Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, and Ryan Blaney round out the top five.

Lap 17, William Byron leads the race with Kyle Larson in second; Ross Chastain, Joey Logano and Christopher Bell rounding out the top five.  Since the race start, Tyler Reddick has moved up 19 spots after not having any practice on Saturday due to the crew having to make an engine change.

Ty Gibbs has dropped to 22nd after starting in the top 10.  He was holding up a pack of drivers early in the race.

Lap 21, Willialm Byron holds the lead with teammate Kyle Larson right behind; Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Joey Logano round out the top five.  Kyle Busch is in eights five seconds behind the leader.

Lap 24, Denny Hamlin passes pole sitter Joey Logano for fifth.

Lap 30, William Byron continues to lead the race with a lead of over a second on Kyle Larson. 

After reporting a tight condition, Kyle Busch hits the wall with the right rear of his car.  He dropped from seventh to eleventh after hitting the wall.  Busch reports a possible alignment issue.

Lap 33, Ryan Blaney makes a green flag pit stop.  Martin Truex Jr follows Blaney.

Lap 35, Denny Hamlin makes his green flag pit stop and more drivers come down pit road for service.

Pole sitter Joey Logano reports a very tight issue; the team makes some adjustments during his pit stop.

Lap 37, leaders William Byron and Kyle Larson make the green flag pitstops and havnd the lead over to Brad Keselowoski.

Noah Gragson was caught speeding on pit road.

Tyle Reddick takes over the lead as more drivers in front of hism make their pit stops.

Tyler Reddick, JJ Yeley, and BJ McLeod have yet to make their pit stops.

Lap 40, Tyler Reddick makes his pit stop and gives the lead over to William Byron.

Ty Gibbs’ team was charged with too many men over the wall.

Making his pas through penalty, Noah Gragson is caught once again speeding and will have to make a second pass through penalty.

Michael McDowell was also caught speeding on pit road.

There are 27 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 48, William Byron leads the race and is quickly approaching Austin Dillon to put him a lap down.

Lap 49, the top fivea re William Byron, Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin.

Lap 52, William Byron has pulled out to a lead of over half a second on Kyle Larson; Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

Lap 60, William Byron holds on to his half second lead on Kyle Larson with Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top five.

Several of the drivers are reporting tight and handling issues in their cars.

All 36 drivers are still on the track with 23 cars on the lead lap.

Of the top eleven drivers, only two of them William Byron and Kyle Busch started the race in the top 10, the remainder have worked their way through the field.

With just eleven laps remaining in stage one, William Byron continues to lead the race with Kyle Larson in second; Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top five.

Lap 72, Denny Hamlin passes Christopher Bell for fourth.

With a one second lead, William Byron wins stage one.

Drivers come down pit road for service with William Byron winning the race off of pit road.  Some of the drivers who were complaining of tight conditions in the cars are now saying the cars are loose.

Tyler Reddick got blocked into his pit stall by the 16 car of AJ Allmendinger and slowed his getting back out on the track.  He returns to the track in 21st place.

Ryan Preece is the “lucky dog”.

Owner of the number nine car, Rick Hendrick is in Dawsonville, Georgia with Chase Elliott who is back home after breaking the tibia in his left leg while snowboarding in Colorado, watching the race.  Elliott had surgery for the break on Friday night and flew home to Georgia on Saturday.

William Byron brings the field down for the green flag start of stage two on lap 90 and holds on to his lead.

Lap 92, William Byron leads the race with Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Ross Chastain rounding out the top five.

Lap 95, William Byron has pulled out to a lead of over half a second on Kyle Larson; Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.

Lap 103, Chris Buescher and Daniel Suarez make contact but the track stays green.

Josh Berry gets into the wall but the track stayed green.

Lap 105, William Byron now has a lead of over two seconds on Kyle Larson; Ross Chastain, Christopher Bell, and Alex Bowman round out the top five.

Drivers are beginning to make their green flag pit stops.

Ryan Blaney is reporting “a crazy vibration” in his car.

Lap 109, William Byron has led 90 laps to far.  Chase Elliott is out of the race for at least the next few weeks, but team mates William Byron and Kyle Larson are dominating the race.

Ty Gibbs has some damage to the left front wheel after making contact on the track with Josh Berry.

Lap 117, William Byron leads the race with teammates Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman right behind; Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain round out the top five.

Lap 117, green flag pit stops begin but so far all of the drivers are not on the lead lap.

Lap 124, Martin Truex Jr gives up a top 10 spot to make his green flag pit stop.

Lap 126, leader William Byron makes his green flag pit stop and gives the lead over to complete the cycle of green flag pit stops with the exception of Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Michael McDowell who are not on the lead lap.  William Byron has a two second lead on Kyle Larson.

Lap 133, William Byron has led 120 laps so far; Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, and Ross Chastain.

Lap 140, William Byron has a near second and a half lead on Kyle Larson; Christopher Bell, Alex Bowman, and Ross Chastain round out the top five.

Lap 142, Joey Logano gets loose and hits the wall but the track stays green.  He reports a rear stability issue in the car.

Lap 148, William Byron continues to dominate the race with Kyle Larson in second over a half second back; Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr  rounding out the top five.

Kyle Busch kisses the wall but the track stays green.  He is currently in tenth place.

Lap 155, the top five are William Byron, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr.

Lap 158, leader William Byron has encountered slower traffic.  AJ Allmendinger is the last car on the lead lap in 19th place.

Lap 160, William Byron has led all but 13 laps of today’s race.

Lap 161, William Byron’s lead is now over one second on Kyle Larson; Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.

With a lead of over a second William Byron wins stage two for the stage sweep.

Bubba Wallace passes Christopher Bell for fifth.

Christopher Bell and Bubba Wallace continue to battle for fifth place.

Daniel Suarez passes Christopher Bell for sixth and battles with Bubba Wallace for fifth.

Joey Logano brings out the first caution flag of the day for an on track incident when he hits the wall and spins out making a run through the grass in a three wide battle with Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch.  Ricky Stenhouse Jr barely misses slamming into Logano when Logano comes across the track.  Logano is on pit road with the crews making repairs including the toe link.

Austin Cindric is the “lucky dog”.

Drivers come down pit road for fresh tires and service with Denny Hamlin winning the race off of pit road after taking two tires.  Alex Bowman is the first driver with four fresh tires off pit road.

Erik Jones backs up down pit road to tighten up a loose wheel.  Under the new lug nut/ tire rules, there is no penalty if the wheel comes off on pit road during a caution flag.

Joey Logano’s crew could not repair the car under the seven minute “crash clock” and becomes the first driver out of the race.

Denny Hamlin brings the field down for the green flag restart from the inside lane with Alex Bowman on the outside.  Row tow is Kyle Larson and William Byron.  There are 78 laps remaining in the race.

Denny Hamlin gets out in front but there are two rows of three wide battles behind him.

With 53 laps remaining in the race, Kyle Larson has a one second lead on Denny Hamlin; William Byron, Alex Bowman, and Martin Truex Jr rounds out the top five.

With 26 to go, Alex Bowman passes Martin Truex Jr for fourth.

Twenty-five to go; three of the Hendrick Motorsports cars are in the top five.

Twenty to go, Kyle Larson leads the way with a lead of over four and a half seconds over William Byron who dominated the race earlier; Denny Hamlin, Alex Bowman, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.

Fifteen to go, Kyle Larson holds on to his four and a half second lead on William Byron; Denny Hamlin, Alex Bowman, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.

Twelve to go, William Byron has cut into Kyle Larson’s lead and is now just over three seconds back; Denny Hamlin, Alex Bowman, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.

Nine to go and there are 19 cars on the lead lap with Joey Logano the only driver out of the race.

Slapping the wall a few times has not deterred Tyler Reddick, he is still rim riding in 12th place.

With just four laps to go, Aric Almirola gets into the wall and brings out the second on track caution flag.  The race will go into overtime.

Several of the drivers come down pit road for fresh tires with William Byron winning the race off of pit road by a nose.

Martin Truex Jr is the only lead lap driver who stayed out on the track.  Erik Jones gets the “lucky dog” and also stayed out on the track.

In a green/white/checker finish; if a wreck comes out before the leader takes the white flag, they do it again; however, if the leader takes the white flag before a caution comes out the race is over.

Martin Truex Jr brings the field down for the inside lane with William Byron on the outside lane.  Martin Truex Jr edges out for the lead initially but William Byron comes up on the outside to battle for the lead as drivers get four wife across the track. 

William Byron takes the white flag.  Back on the pack AJ Allmendinger spins out.

William Byron wins the race for his fifth career win!  This is another 1-2-3 finish for Hendrick Motorsports.
