During qualifying for the Xfinity Series race on Saturday afternoon, FOX Sports announced that Chase Elliott will not be driving the number nine car on Sunday.
While on a snowboarding trip in Colorado on Friday, Chase Elliott injured his left leg that will require surgery which is scheduled for Friday night.
JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry will take over the driving duties for the number nine car on Sunday.
Number nine car owner Rick Hendrick spoke on Elliott and his injury saying, “Chase’s health is our primary concern. He’s spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs.” Hendrick noted that the team hopes to issue a further update on Elliott.
Josh Berry spoke on being named the driver for the number nine this weekend saying, “it’s been an interesting couple hours. I just hope Chase will recover and be back in the thing soon. But, it’s really a great opportunity for me.”
He added, “I want to thank Mr. Hendrick that they think enough of me, to do it. It will be a big night and day tomorrow.”
Berry is a two time winner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
