Last August, Kyle Busch and his son Brexton were at the Mall of America when a shooting event occurred.  The Busch’s were unharmed.  He has a licensed to conceal and carry a gun.  However, that does not give Busch the right to carry his gun anywhere he wants.

Last month, the two time NASCAR Cup Series champion and his wife Samantha went on a holiday in Mexico.  And the gun came along…Busch said mistakenly.

During a routine luggage search the gun was discovered and Busch was detained for illegally having a gun in Mexico.

In a press release from the Mexico Prosecutor General’s Office, a Nevada man who was identified as Kyle Thomas B was involved in an incident on January 27, 2022 involving a gun and hollow-point bullets.

Busch was later sentenced to 3.5 years in jail and a $1,100 fine; and then released with no information on how or when he would serve his sentence.

On February 6, 2023 Busch released a statement on the issue saying, “in late January, Samantha and I enjoyed a several-day vacation in Mexico.  When departing the country, my handgun was flagged during routine screening at the airport. I have a valid concealed carry permit from my local authority and adhere to all handgun laws, but I made a mistake by forgetting it was in my bag.  Discovery of the handgun led to my detainment while the situation was resolved. I was not aware of Mexican law and had no intention of bringing my handgun into Mexico.”

He continued, “when it was discovered, I fully cooperated with the authorities, accepted the penalties, and returned to North Carolina.  I apologize for my mistake and appreciate the respect shown by all parties as we resolved the matter. My family and I consider this issue closed.”

Busch ran in the Busch Light Clash on February 5 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum where he finished third with he new team Richard Childress Racing behind his new teammate Austin Dillon.  Busch is scheduled to run in the Duel races on February 16 to set the field for the Daytona 500 on February 19.
