Before NASCAR gets the season started on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway next month, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship gets racing started at Daytona on the road course with the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
IMSA allows a total of 61 cars on the three plus mile road course in five different classes. The 2023 field is packed full with all 61 spots taken including drivers from IndyCar and NASCAR. A total of 62 drivers that are past Rolex 24 winners are included among the field o 234 drivers. Also included in the lineup are over three dozen drivers who have won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, three Indianapolis 500 winners, and a Daytona 500 winner.
For this 61st running of the Rolex 24 includes the return of the Grand Touring Prototype class…but with a big twist! All nine of the GTP cars feature an electrified hybrid powertrain system paired with an internal combustion engine. “The anticipation for the actual racing debut of these forward-thinking machines has been, well, electric.”
The remaining four classes are Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2), Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3), GT Daytona Pro (GTD PRO) and GT Daytona (GTD). Along with the nine TGP cars; there are 10 Le Mans Prototype 2 cars, nine Le Mans Prototype 3 cars, 10 GT Daytona Pro cars, and 23 GT Daytona cars entered into the race. There are eight manufacturers entered into the race including new updated cars from Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini.
AND…Colton Herta is doing double duty, driving for two teams!
