Award season has begun…
As a part of Black History Month, the NAACP will hold their annual Image Awards on February 25. For the first time in three years, the 2023 Image Awards will be broadcast on BET with a live audience.
the NAACP Image Awards honour people of colour in various aspects of the entertainment business. President and CEO of the NAACP Derrick Johnson noted, “this year’s nominees have conveyed a wide range of authentic stories and diverse experiences that have resonated with many in our community. We’re proud to recognize their outstanding achievements and performances.”
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” leads the list of nominees with 12; “The Woman King” and “Abbott Elementary” also garnered multiple nominations.
The ABC Network topped the list of nominations with 28 but it was Netflix who topped the nominees for streaming productions with 15. In music RCA Records/RCA Inspiration tops the musical nominees with eleven. In literature, Penguin Random-House takes the lead with nine.
In music, Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar lead the way with five nominations each.
And it should be noted that all five of the nominees in the Entertainer of the Year category are women!
The EVP of specials, music programming & music strategy at BET Connie Orlando said, “we take pride in recognizing the trailblazing achievements and artistry of this year’s esteemed nominees and celebrating the powerful legacy of the NAACP. We look forward to bringing the Image Awards back to Pasadena in front of a live audience and delivering unforgettable moments that epitomize the brilliance of the Black community.”
The 54th annual NAACP Image Awards will feature three new categories – Outstanding Hairstyling, Outstanding Make-Up and Outstanding Costume Design.
