The Covid years were rough on all awards ceremonies as organizations struggled to figure out how to honour the best in their field.  The result was no audience members, video acceptances, and very scaled down events. 

But as awards shows emerged from the pandemic, another issue loomed over their heads – one of a lack of diversity and ethics within the nominees and the organizations themselves.

On January 10, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association returns for a live televised event of the Golden Globe Awards after a year away from the television.

While the rains (that never come to Southern California) pour outside, some of the biggest names in Hollywood will be inside the Beverly Hills Hilton to party and learn which of them will win in the first awards show of the year.  Emmy Award winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will serve as host for the gala event.  Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy and television writer and producer Ryan Murphy are scheduled to have tributes.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” leads the way with eight nominations. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” follows with six nominations.

In the nominations for television, the sitcom “Abbott Elementary” leads the way with five.  “The White Lotus,” “Dahmer,” “The Crown,” “Pam & Tommy” and “Only Murders in the Building” all earned four nominations each.

After a monologue of nearly 10 minutes on the HFPA and recent events related to the Golden Globes, Jennifer Hudson presented the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture to Ke Huy Quan for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.  This is his first Golden Globe win; he kissed the award after taking the stage.

The award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture went to Angela Bassett for her role in “Black Panther” Wakanda Forever”.

The award for Best Supporting Actor in a television series went to Tyler James Williams for his role in “Abbott Elementary”.  This is his first nomination and win. 

The award for Best Original Score of a Motion Picture went to Justin Hurwitz for “Babylon”.  This is his fourth award in four nominations.

The award for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture went to the writers of “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR”

The award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in Television goes to Jeremy Allen White for his role in “The Bear”.  This is his first Golden Globe win.

The award for Best Actress in a Television Series goes to Quinta Brunson for her role in “Abbott Elementary”.

The award for Best Actor in  Comedy or Musical Motion Picture went to Colin Farrell for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin”.

The award for the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Motion Picture went to Michelle Yeoh for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.  In her first win she noted that she was just going to stand there and take it all in.

This year the HFPA has a piano player to provide the music.  She is quick to start playing during the acceptance speeches.

The  award for Best Animated Motion Picture goes to “Pinocchio” by Guillermo Del Toro.

The award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama goes to Austin Butler for his role as Elvis Presley in “Elvis”.  This is his first Golden Globe nomination and win.

The award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama goes to Zendaya for her role in “Euphoria”.

The award for Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Television Series goes to Julia Garner for her role in “Ozark”.  This is her first Golden Globe win.

Award winning entertainer Billy Porter took the stage in a long fuchsia tuxedo gown with a bow tie to pay tribute to writer, show creator, and producer Ryan Murphy.  The “Glee” and “American Horror Story” creator was honoured with the Carol Burnett Award for Lifetime Achievement.  His acceptance speech was filled with paying tribute to LGBTQ+ actors.

The award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama goes to Cate Blanchett for her role in “Tar”.

The award for Best Foreign Motion Picture goes to “Argentina, 1985”.

Sean Penn took the microphone to pay homage to the real life heroes like the young Iranians protesting before the President of Ukraine spoke via a video broadcast. 

The award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay goes to Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin”.

The award for Best Motion Picture Director went to Steven Spielberg for “The Fablemans”. 

The award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie goes to Paul Walter Hauser for his role in “Black Bird”.  This is his first nomination and win.

The award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie goes to Jennifer Coolidge for her role in “The White Lotus”.

The award for Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie goes to Amanda Seygfried for her role in “The Dropout”.

The award for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie goes to Evan Peters for his role in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”.

The award for the Best Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie goes to “The White Lotus”.

Tracey Morgan presents the Cecile B. DeMille Award to fellow comedian and actor Eddie Murphy.  Jamie Lee Curtis also comes on stage to pay tribute to Murphy.  The father of 10 noted that he has been in the business for 46 years.  To the new up and comers he told them that there is a blueprint to achieve the success they want – pay your taxes, mind your business, and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your mouth.

The award for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series goes to Kevin Costner for his role in “Yellowstone”.  Not at the awards, Costner is under the current shelter in place order due to the rains and flooding.

The award for Best Television Comedy or Musical goes to “Abbott Elementary”.

The award for Best Television Drama goes to “House of the Dragon”.

The award for Best Comedy or Musical Motion Picture goes to “The Banshees of Inisherin”.

The final award of the night was for Best Motion Picture Drama and went to “The Fablemans”.
