It is a very busy week for entertainer Wayne Brady who is one of the four finalists along with partner Witney Carson on “Dancing with the Stars” and he is the host for the 2022 edition of the “American Music Awards” for his first appearance at the only fan voted music awards show.

Brady spoke on being chosen as host of the AMA’s saying, “I’m ecstatic and honored to host this year’s AMAs. As a musician and music lover, it’s amazing to be part of a night where music fans make their voices heard!  It’s a big show, so I’m bringing it all…The funny, the music and the moves!”

Dick Clark created the “American Music Awards” to offer music fans a chance to express their thoughts on what was the best in music; as opposed to the industry voted Grammy Awards where fellow musicians and music industry people choose the winners.

Country music star Carrie Underwood, Imagine Dragons, J.I.D., P!nk, Tems, Wizkid, Yola, Anitta, Ari Lennox, Bebe Rexha, Charlie Puth, David Guetta, Dove Cameron, GloRilla, Lil Baby, and Stevie Wonder are scheduled to perform during the gala celebration.

Fresh off his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, music legend and “American Idol” judge Lionel Richie will be presented with the Icon Award as a part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the “American Music Awards”.  Besides his Rock Hall induction, Richie has earned an Oscar, four Grammy, and a Golden Globe awards for his music.  He has sold over 125 albums around the world.  Along the way he has collaborated with numerous artists including Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross,  Barbra Streisand, and is the co-writer of the global charity anthem “We Are the World” with Michael Jackson.  Richie has been a Recording Academy MusiCares Person of the Year, the recipient of the Johnny Mercer Prize from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is a Kennedy Center Honors, and a Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song winner.  Since winning his fir AMA in 1979 for “Three Times a Lady”, Richie has gone on to amass a total of 17 AMA trophies and continues to hold the record for most wins in a night with six.

Wearing roller skates, P!nk gets the night of music started off with a performance of “Never Gonna Not Dance Again”.

Host Wayne Brady gave a performance as a part of his opening act that included the line “nobody’s getting slapped tonight.”  DWTS partner Witney Carson came out and they did a short dance.  Guitar virtuoso Orianthi also came out and played her guitar.

Shery Lee Ralph presented the award for New Artist of the Year to Dove Cameron.  Dove said that every award she wins will first and foremost be dedicated to the queer community.

Making her AMA debut, Bebe Rexha joins with David Guetta for a performance of “I’m Good”.

Meghan Trainor presents the award for Favorite Rock Artist to Machine Gun Kelly. 

Niecy Nash presented the award for Favorite Country Duo or Group to Dan + Shay. 

Making her AMA debut Brazilian star Anitta takes the stage for a Portuguese and English performance of “Lobby” and “Envolver”.  She is joined on stage by Missy Elliott for the performance.

Kelly Rowland presented the award for Favorite Male R&B Artist to Chris Brown.  Brown was not present at the ceremony and Rowland accepted the award in his behalf.

Jimmie Allen took the stage to pay homage to Loretta Lynn with a performance of a piece of “Coal Miner’s Daughter”.  He then introduced 17 time AMA winner Carrie Underwood for a performance of “Crazy Angels”.  She began the performance high above the stage in a sphere.

Karuchi Tran presented the award for Favorite Pop Album to Taylor Swift for “Red” (Taylor’s version). 

Glorilla gives a performance in her AMA debut that includes motor vehicles on the stage. 

Elle Goulding presents the award Favorite Female Latin Artist to Anitta.  This marks the first time that a Brazilian artist has ever won an AMA.

House DJ D-Nice requested that host Wayne Brady to freestyle.  He enlisted the help of the audience some ideas to help him create his song. 

Latto presented the award for Favorite Afrobeats Artist (a new category) to Wizkid.  Wizkid was not present at the ceremony but Latto excepted the award for him.

Rockers Imagine Dragons took the stage for a performance and is joined by J.I.D. that includes their AMA nominated song “Enemy”.

The award for Favorite Rock Song went to the Italian group Maneskin for “Beggin’”.                      

Melissa Etheridge introduced P!nk who paid tribute to Olivia Newton John with a performance of “Hopelessly Devoted to You”.  Various photos of John aired behind P!nk as she sang.  Many people in the audience joined along in singing the song.

Lil Baby takes the stage for a performance of his hits “California Breeze” and “In a Moment”.

The award for Favorite Hip-Hop Song to Future with Drake and Tems for “Wait For U”.

The award for Favorite Music Video went to Taylor Swift for “All to Well” the short film.

Yola takes the stage to perform “Break the Bough” – the Song with Soul – a song that uses music for social change.

The award for Favorite Pop Song went to Harry Styles for “As it Was”.

AMA New Artist of the Year Dove Cameron takes the stage for her AMA debut performance of “Boyfriend”.

Dan + Shay presented the award for Artist of the Year to Taylor Swift

Fifty years ago Smokey Robinson hosted the very first American Music Awards; tonight he returns to the AMA stage to present the AMA Icon Award to Lionel Richie.

Charlie Puth and Ari Lennox join music icon Stevie Wonder for a tribute to Lionel Richie and had the house on their joining in for “We are the World”.  Lionel came up on stage during the song.
