One last race remains to decide who will reign as the new champion in the Xfinity Series.  The championship four feature three of the four drivers at JR Motorsports – Justin Allgaier, Josh Berry, and Noah Gragson; the fourth driver is Joe Gibbs grandson Ty Gibbs driving for his grandfather at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Ty Gibbs was the center of controversy this past week after the 20 year old driver purposely wrecked teammate Brandon Jones to win the race at Martinsville Speedway.  Had Jones won the race he was leading on the last lap of a third overtime finish when he was wrecked, he would have been in the championship four and eliminating Justin Allgaier from the playoffs.  NASCAR has chosen not to issue any punishment to Gibss or JGR for the wreck.

On a cool Saturday afternoon, 39 teams will take to the track for a qualifying run to fill 38 starting spots in the race.

While waiting to make his qualifying run, Noah Gragson was lounging on the pit road wall.

Dillonn Bassett Jr is the first driver on the track to make a qualifying run and posted a time of 27.174 seconds around the one mile track.

In a pit road interview Brandon Jones said that he has moved on from last week and is working to try and win the race in his final run with Joe Gibbs Racing before taking over the driving duties of the number nine car for JR Motorsports when Noah Gragson moves up to the Cup Series and Petty GMS Racing.

Saying that he is playing with house money, JR Motorsports driver Justin Allgaier noted that the teams aren’t really acting any different this weekend then they do any other race weekend.  The JRM drivers are looking to finish 1-2-3.

Several of the drivers are very loose on the track while making their qualifying run.

In a pit road interview, Ty Gibbs admitted that the controversy over the last week is his own fault; adding that he needs to clean up his act and earn the drivers respect.  He added that he hopes the young drivers coming up can learn from his mistakes.

Off the wall and awake, Noah Gragson said that he is looking forward to the race today, noting that they have had success at Phoenix in the past.  He added that his final race with JRM is bittersweet and thanked everyone on the team for all that they have done.

With a time of 26.806 seconds Ty Gibbs puts his number 54 JGR car on the pole.  Non-playoff driver Sammy smith will start alongside Gibbs on the front row.
