Last year Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham premiered their new summer racing series SRX Racing where drivers from different racing series compete against each other in identically prepared cars.

Smoke himself, Tony Stewart took home the championship trophy.

SRX debuted its second season on June 18 in Pensacola, Florida with Helio Castroneves taking home the first win of the season.

This week the crew travels to South Boston, Virginia for a little racing on the asphalt.  South Boston is known as much for their bologna burgers as they are for their racing.

This week the field includes Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Ernie Francis Jr, Bobby Labonte, Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Peyton Sellers, Paul Tracy, Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves, Michael Waltrip, and Ryan Newman.

Each race features a “local hero” driver; for this race that is Peyton Sellers.

Willie T. Ribbs has turned his steering wheel in for a microphone and provides some commentary for the race.

The racing format is two 12 minute heat races with the field inverted for the second heat and a main feature race.

After leading every lap, Greg Biffle wins heat number one.

Helio Castroneves wins heat number two.

The feature race is 100 laps around the 4/5ths of a mile track.

As with any short track race, there is nearly as much heat off the track as there is on.  Paul Tracy is mad at Helio Castroneves after some on track contact.  Tony Stewart and Ernie Francis Jr nearly came to blows with some harsh language from Stewart after an on track incident.

Marco Andretti sits on the pole for the 100 lap main event with Tony Stewart alongside on the front row.

Running second, Tony Stewart carries on a casual conversation with the CBS Sports crew while racing under the green flag!

Ryan Hunter-Reay gets loose and sends Paul Tracy into the wall.  The retaining wall at South Boston does not have a safer barrier; it is all concrete.  Hunter-Reay also sustained some damage to his car.  Paul Tracy is out of the race.

Marco Andretti and Greg Biffle make contact and sends the drivers around in a battle for second place.  Still in the race, Andretti is back in eleventh place.

Michael Waltrip gets turned around and gets into the wall after some contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay.  Unhappy with each other, the duo continues to make their feelings known with their cars even during the caution flag.  Michael Waltrip is out of the race.  Waltrip says that Hunter-Reay “dumped” him.  Waltrip says that they will NOT be sharing a beer together after the race.

The last time race leader Tony Stewart won a race at South Boston, he was driving a USAC midget car.

Tony Stewart wins the second race of the season at South Boston Speedway before a full house.
