For avid race fans the last Sunday in May is the biggest day in racing when Formula One runs the Monaco Grand Prix, IndyCar runs the Indianapolis 500, and NASCAR runs the Coca Cola 600.
On May 29, 2022 IndyCar marks 106 years of racing on the two and a half mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Scott Dixon sitting on the pole and bringing the 33 car field to the green flag.

During a practice run Colton Herta crashed his car and after being cleared by race officials will be allowed to run the race in a backup car.
Just one week after being the Grand Marshall for the NASCAR All Star race, Country music star Blake Shelton for today’s race.
Drivers have been racing at Indianapolis almost as long as there have been motorized vehicles. For the first time in Indy 500 history the drivers will be racing using a new fuel
Before a packed house of 300,000 fans, Scott Dixon brings the field to the green flag and the drivers immediately spread out across the track with Alex Palou leading the first lap.
Chip Ganassi Racing team mates Scott Dixon and Alex Palou have a fuel conservation plan that includes the two drivers swapping the lead back and forth to allow the second place driver to take advantage of the draft to save fuel.
During qualifying, Scott Dixon set a record of over 234 miles per hour; in the race, the cars are running speeds of around 220mph.
Lap 31, the drivers begin their first green flag pit stops. Once the green flag pit stops have cycled through, Alex Palou leads the race.
The first caution flag of the race comes out on lap 39 when Rinnus VeeKay crashes after getting loose and hitting the wall and ends up in the grass. While there was a fireball during the crash, the 21 year old Dutch driver climbed out of the car and walked away from the crash.
Alex Palou brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 47 and the drivers get four wide in a battle for position. Alex Palou leads the race with Scott Dixon in second.
Team mates Alex Palou and Scott Dixon continue their swapping of the lead to continue trying to save fuel.
In a backup car, Colton Herta gets loose and just misses hitting the wall. After hitting the wall on Friday, Herta’s car ended upside down.
Lap 68, the second round of green flag pit stops begins.
The caution flag comes out on lap 69 when rookie Callum Ilott gets loose and hits the wall sending debris everywhere. Alex Palou was heading for pit road when the caution flag came out and is now mired at the back of the field. The crew has to bring Palou down pit road for an emergency stop for fuel. Once the race goes green, he will have to serve a penalty.
Pato O’Ward is the new leader.
Once pit stops have cycled through, Scott Dixon has the lead once again and brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 78 and holds on to the lead.
Lap 80, home town hero Conor Daly takes the lead to rousing cheers; but the lead is short lived after Scott Dixon retakes the lead.
Lap 86, four time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves has moved up 13 spots since the start of the race on the way to his bid for a fifth win.
Lap 100, halfway, Scott Dixon leads the race with Concor Daly in second; Pato O’Ward, Marcus Ericsson, and Tony Kanaan are the top five drivers. Two drivers are out of the race with only one car not on the lead lap.
Lap 106, Conor Daly is the first driver to make the third round of green flag pit stops when Roman Grosjean crashes into the wall spreading debris and ending in the grass to bring out the third caution flag of the race.
In a déjà vu all over again scenario, Scott Dixon was ready to come down pit road for fuel when the caution flag came out. Fortunately for Dixon, pit road opened in time for him to come down pit road nearly out of fuel. Scott Dixon wins the race off of pit road.
Conor Daly brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 113 but it is Scott Dixon who gets out in front before drivers get four wide and Pato O’Ward takes the lead.
Lap 114, Scott Dixon retakes the lead.
With the race past halfway, the time of patience is over and the drivers are getting aggressive in a battle for position.
The air intake hose on Helio Castroneves has come loose and is flopping around. The air intake is what provides the driver with some cooler air. It is a warm day and getting hotter; track temperatures are near 120 degrees.
Scott Dixon has led 75 of the 135 laps so far. He now becomes the top driver in leading laps at IMS with 645.
Colton Herta is out of the race with a mechanical issue.
Lap 140, drivers begin the cycle of green flag pit stops.
Once pit stops have cycled through, Pato O’Ward is the leader with Scott Dixon in second.
The caution flag comes out on lap 152 when Scott McLaughlin slams into the wall twice sending debris everywhere. McLaughlin’s demolished car is topped along the wall. He is out of the car and waving to the fans.
Pato O’Ward brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 158; drivers get four and five wide across the track with Scott Dixon in the lead.
Sage Karum gets into the grass but saves the car and the track stays green.
Lap 161, Pato O’Ward takes the lead.
IndyCar features drivers from all over the world but there has never been a Mexican born driver to win the Indianapolis 500.
Scott Dixon retakes the lead with 35 laps to go. At the end of the season the New Zealand driver has planned a trip home for the first time in three years.
Scott McLaughlin said that he got caught by a gust of wind but other than a bruised ego he is fine.
Ed Carpenter is the first driver to make a final green flag pit stop on lap 169.
Lap 173, more drivers come down pit road for green flag pit stops.
Lap 176, leader Scott Dixon makes his green flag pit stop. He was caught speeding on pit road and will have to serve a pass through penalty.
Twenty to go, drivers are in the middle of green flag pit stops with Tony Kanaan leading the field. After dominating the race, Scott Dixon is caught speeding on pit road and is now back in 26th place.
Fifteen to go, Marco Andretti leads the race but has yet to make his pit stop. As will second place driver Jimmie Johnson.
Marco Andretti makes his pit stop and gives the lead over to Jimmie Johnson who leads his first lap of the Indianapolis 500.
With 12 laps to go Jimmie Johnson makes his pit stop and gives the lead to Marcus Ericsson.
Ten to go, Marcus Ericsson leads the race with Pato O’Ward in second; Tony Kanaan is in third.
With just six laps remaining in the race, Jimmie Johnson brings out the caution flag when he gets loose, crashes into the wall, and gets into the grass. The front end of Johnson’s car is demolished. Johnson climbs out of the car.
Race control has red flagged the race with just five laps remaining in the race. Drivers come down pit road to lineup for the red flag. The goal of Race Control is to finish the race under green flag conditions.
The cars are covered with tire marbles from rubber left on the track.
After a red flag condition of about seven minutes, Race Control gives the command to start the engines. The drivers will get just one yellow flag lap around the track before the flag man waves the green flag.
Swedish driver Marcus Ericsson brings the field down for the green flag restart with Mexican Pato O’Ward in second for a two lap shootout to the finigh. Ericsson is in front but the drivers battle for position.
Marcus Ericsson takes the white flag!
Pato O’Ward battles with Marcus Ericsson for the lead but Ericsson holds him off. Yellow flag comes out for a Sage Karum crash. Marcus Ericsson wins the Indianapolis 500! He is the second Swedish native to win the race.
It has been 10 years since a Chip Ganassi Racing car has won the Indy 500. Ganassi hops on the car to take the elevator ride to victory lane.
Along with the ivy wreath and the winner’s ring, Marcush Ericsson will also get to take home the pace car home.
