A week into the Winter Olympic games in Beijing, the United States finally earns its first gold medals with Nathan Chen and Chloe Kim.

In the men’s combined alpine skiing, Austrian Johannes Strolz won the gold. It was 34 years ago that his father Hubert won a gold medal in the same event at the Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. The combined event is a downhill run and a slolam run.

In the women’s 10k cross-country skiing event, Norwegian Therese Johaung took the gold medal for her second gold of these Olympic games.

In the men’s individual free skate, American Nathan Chen continued his redemption after the 2018 games in Pyeongchang where he ended up in fifth. In the short program Chen set a new Olympic scoring record. In the free skate he scored 218 points to secure a gold medal with the next three sakers all coming from Japan.

In the mixed team freestyle skiing aerials, the United States stood atop the podium earning the gold medal. This was the first time in over a decade that the American team will bring home a medal. It was the first Olympic medals for team members Ashley Caldwell, Christopher Lillis, and Justin Schoenefeld. This was the debut of the Aerials for the Olympics.

In the team relay luge event, Germany continued their winning ways by sweeping the event, winning gold in all events. Germany is eleven for 12 in gold medals over the past three Olympic games.

In the women’s halfpipe snowboard event, American Chloe Kim successfully defended her title with a gold medal.

In the men’s snowboardcross event, Austrian Alessandro Haemmerle beat out Canadian Eliot Grondin in a photo finish to win the gold medal.

In the women’s 5,000 meter speedskating event, Dutch skater Irene Schouten sept the distance events with the gold medal and breaking a 20 year old Olympic record in the process.

In the medal count for February 10, Latvia and Spain add their names to the list of medal winners for a total of 25 countries.

With five countries in double digit medal wins, Austria has taken over the overall lead with 13; while Germany holds on to the lead in gold medals with six.
