In 2021, the Recording Academy faced a number of challenges including putting on an awards ceremony amid a global pandemic and allegations of favourtism and racism.
In the wake of the allegations, The Accademy has made a number of changes to how the 2022 nominees were selected.
In August the Recording Academy included an Inclusion Rider to ensure a more diverse and inclusive event.
On November 23, the Recording Academy named the nominees for the 2022 – 64th annual – Grammy Awards under the new rules which include an elimination of the review committees; allowing nominations to be made by a majority vote. The Grammy Awards is a peer voted award.
Several years ago The Academy reduced the number of categories from 110 to 84. This year two new categories have been added to bring the total to 86 – Best Global Music Performance and Best Música Urbana Album. To further ensure that the categories are being voted upon by qualified members, voters may only vote on a total 10 genre categories in a maximum of three fields.
Jon Batiste leads the list of nominees with eleven. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, The Weeknd, AC/DC, and Jay-Z all garnered multiple nominations.
With a total of 83 nominations, Ja-Z now holds the record for the most nominations in Grammy history. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tops Quincy Jones who had 80.
Winners will be announced in a gala event on January 31, 2022 in Los Angeles.
Any musical work released between September 1, 2020 and September 300, 2021 are eligible for submission into the 2022 Grammy Awards.
