After a long wait due to the global pandemic, the American Theatre Wing has announced the host for the 2020 edition of the Tony Awards. Dividing the four hour extravaganza in half, award winning performers Leslie Odem Jr and Audra McDonald will share the hosting duties for Tony Awards when they take place on September 26, 2021.
McDonald will open the ceremonies with Odem taking over at 9pm and finishing out the night.
This year the Tony Awards will be held at the Winter Garden Theatre before a live audience. Everyone attending the festivities must show proof of vaccination and are required to wear a face covering at all times inside the theatre. Children under 12 may be permitted in the venue with proof of a negative test.
Due to the shutdown of Broadway last March, only 18 plays and musicals are eligible for nominations – about half of the normal 34 normally included in the nomination process. The number of categories has also dropped this year to 25.
Broadway and theatre fans will have to access the pay streaming service Paramount + to see the entire gala event. Only the last two hours are being aired on the CBS network.
Leslie Odem Jr played Aaron Burr in the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”. Audra McDonald appears in the play “Frankie and Johnny” and a nominee this year.
