Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer joined an exclusive club of less than 20 members on Sunday, September 12, 2021 when he became the 19th pitcher to throw at least 3,000 strikeouts during his 14 year career. Justin Verlander is the only active pitcher with 3,000 strikeouts.

Scherzer reached the milestone in the top of the fifth inning when he struck out Eric Hosmer before a home town crowd on the way to the Dodgers shutting out the San Diego Padres 8-0. Scherzer took a perfect game into the eighth inning including a perfect nine pitch three strikeout second inning. It was the third time in Scherzer’s career that he has thrown a perfect inning; joining Sandy Koufax and Chris Sale for the honour.

After becoming strikeout number 3,000, Hosmer broke up the perfect game in the eighth inning with a double. Scherzer left the game at the end of the eighth inning with one hit, no walks, and nine strikeouts.

Speaking on the accomplishment, Scherzer said, “everybody can have the ability to do this,” Scherzer said, “but few have the durability to do this.”

Max Scherzer joined the World Series champion Dodgers in July in a trade from the Washington Nationals.

Since joining the Dodgers, Scherzer has thrown 29.2 innings in eight starts. In that time he has gone 6-0 with an ERA of 0.88 and 72 strikeouts. Not losing a game since May 30, he is currently on a 10 game winning streak. His 2021 season stats are 14-4 with a League leading 2.17 ERA. In 27 starts in the 2021 season, Max Scherzer has thrown 218 strikeouts.

He has been a part of the annual All Star team eight times and has won the Cy Young Award three times. Scherzer was a part of the World Series champion Washington Nationals in 2019. He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2006 MLB draft.

At 37, Max Scherzer shows no signs of slowing down.
