The Billboard Music Awards kicks off with a musical extravaganza that includes DJ Khalid and H.E.R.

“The Voice” coach and Jona Brother Nick Jonas hosts this years gal event held outside at the Microsoft Theater for his first hosting of the show.

The winners of the Billboard Music Awards are selected according to radio airplay, streaming, downloads, and sales.

Inside the Microsoft Theater, Doja Cat and SZA take the stage for a performance.

In the first award of the night, the award for Top Hot 100 Artists went to The Weeknd. In his acceptance speech he said that his fellow nominees deserved the award as much as he did…if not more.

Twenty one pilots take the stage to perform their song “Shy Away”.

The award for Top Selling Song went to BTS for “Dynamite”.

Alicia Keys takes the stage for a performance after an introduction from former First Lady Michelle Obama. Her performance included playing part of the “Moonlight Sonata” by Ludwig von Beethoven, playing multiple pianos, and her breakout hit “Falling”.

The award for Top Female Country Artist went to former “American Idol” Gabby Barrett. Barrett also won the award for Top Country Song for “I Hope”.

The award for Top Latin Artist went to Bad Bunny.

Inside the theater John Bon Jovi comes to the stage to present P!nk the Billboard Icon Award. This is only the tenth time that an artist has been presented with the Icon Award. P!nk takes the stage to perform some of her songs. And what P!nk performance isn’t complete without an spectacular acrobatic performance? This time she has a young helper joining her in the air. In her acceptance speech P!ni said that she loves what she does and the people she does it with; adding that she can’t wait to get back out there again.

In his Atlanta studio, Lil Baby presented the award for Top Hot 100 Song to The Weeknd for his song “Blinding Lights”. The Weeknd said that his fans make him want to do this forever.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis about a song they wrote 30 years ago from Prince’s Paisley Park. Ann Nesbit and the Sounds of Blackness perform the song.

Karol G takes the stage for her debut Billboard Music Awards performance.

Swiss Beatz pays tribute to some of the rap artists who have passed on in the past year. He presents the award for Top Rap Song to Da Baby with Roddy Ricch for “Rockstar”. Da Baby thanked the fans saying that if they don’t press play, the music doesn’t get heard.

The Billboard Change Maker Award went to Trae The Truth who worked to help his fellow Houston residents during Hurrican Harvey. He also created an organization to help citizens in hardship. In only two days he organized a march in support of George Floyd that brought 60,000 people together. Noting that he came from the streets, Trae said that it’s important to change the world and support others.

Korean boy band BTS gives a performance from Seoul, Korea of their new single “Butter”.

Earning the Artist of the Decade Award, Drake said that his friends and family should be the ones to present the award. After 232 songs on the Billboard charts, record breaking chart hits, 27 Billboard Awards, and sold out performances; Canadian artist Drake is named the Billboard Artist of the Decade. He comes out on stage holding the hand of his small son and then hands the award to the child. Drake notes that he is very self conscious about his music and wonders how he can do better; adding that tonight he is sure he has done something right.

The only artist to have an all Spanish language album top the Billboard 200 Album chart, Bad Bunny gives a performance.

The award for Top Rock Artist went to Machine Gun Kelly. He noted that this is the first time he has been invited to a big stage to accept an award. It happened 15 years after his first release.

Making their Billboard Awards debut performance, Glass Animals take the stage.

The Weeknd hits the streets…um parking lots… of Los Angeles for a performance.

Cynthia Erivo presents the award for Top Billboard 200 Album of the Year to Pop Smoke for “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon”. A posthumous award, Pop Smoke’s mother accepted the award in his honour.

Revolutionizing the music video back in the 80’s, Duran Duran take the stage at the Hammersmith with a performance that includes “Notorious” and “Hungry Like the Wolf”.

Leslie Odam Jr presents the award for Top Artist of the Year The Weeknd!

Closing out the night of music, host Nick Jonas joins brother Kevin and Joe for a performance that includes Marshmello on the keyboard.
