While many movie theatres have been closed over the past year, movie fans found ways to watch films; whether it be via a streaming service or renting it online.

After a delay of three months due to the Covid pandemic, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the 93rd annual Academy Awards for the best in film.

This year in a socially distanced event, The Oscars opened like the form they honour – a film.

The first award of the night went for the Best Original Screenplay and was awarded to Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman”; a film she wrote while filming “The Crown”.

The award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller for “The Father”.

Award winning actress Laura Dern presented the award for Best International Feature Film to “Another Round” from Denmark. 

The award for Best Supporting Actor went to Daniel Kaluuya for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”

Don Cheadle presents the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling to Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Mia Neal, and Jamika Wilson for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.

The award for Best Costume Design went to Ann Roth for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.

Brian Cranston walks in an empty Dolby Theater as he spoke on the Motion Picture and Television Fund; a fund that was created in the wake of the 1918 Flu Pandemic.  Workers from the MPTF Home were presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. 

Live from Seoul, Korea, the award for Best Direction of a Feature Film went to Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland”.

Riz Ahmed presents the award for Best Achievement in Sound to Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michellee Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés and Phillip Bladh for “Sound of Metal”.

The award for Best Live Action Short Film went to Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe for “Two Distant Strangers”.

Reese Witherspoon presented the award for Best Animated Short Film to Will McCormack and Michael Govier for “If Anything Happens I Love You”.

The award for Best Animated Feature Film went to Pete Docter and Dana Murray for “Soul”.

Marlee Matlin presented the award for Best Documentary Short Film to Anthony Giacchino and Alice Doyard for “Colette”. 

The award for Best Documentary Feature Film went to Pippa Ehrlich, James Reed, and Craig Foster for “My Octopus Teacher”.

The award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects went to Andrew Jackson, David Lee, Scott Fisher, and Andrew Lockley for “Tenet”.

Brad Pitt presents the award for Best Supporting Actress went to Yuh-Jung Youn for her role in “Minari”.  The Korean born actress said that she could not believe that she was here.

Award winning actress Halle Berry presented the award for Best Production Design to Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale for “Mank”.

The award for Best Cinematography went to Erik Messerschmidt for “Mank”.

Harrison Ford presented the award for Best Achievement in Film Editing to Mikkel E. G. Nielsen for the “Sound of Metal”.

Award winning actress Viola Davis presented the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Tyler Perry.  Perry learned his giving ways from his mother.  He says that his foundation is about turning tragedy into triumph.  He has turned his film company into a quarantine camp, fed thousands, provided shelter for those who needed it, and kept people working in a time of a pandemic.  Perry said that he hopes that in this day and age parents will teach their children to refuse hate.  He dedicated the award to anyone who wants to join him in refusing hate.  Perry received a standing ovation for his award and remarks.

Singer, dancer, and actress Zandaya presented the award for Best Original Score to Trent Reznor, John Batiste, and Atticus Ross for “Soul”.  Ross noted that they had the same 12 notes that Bach had to create their music.

The award for Best Original Song in a Film went to H.E.R., Dernst Emile, and Tiara Thomas for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”.

Angela Bassett presents the In Memoriam segment of the show.  Along with the stars who have passed away over the past year, she mentioned the over three million people around the world who died as a result of the Covid virus and those who were lost due to inequality.  The music of Stevie Wonder played as the slide show of the entertainers aired.

Rita Moreno presented the award for Best Picture to “Nomadland”.

The award for Best Leading Actress went to Frances McDormand for her role in “Nomadland”.

The final award of the night was for Best Leading Actor and went to Anthony Hopkins for his role in “The Father”.
