Co-founder of the band Mazzy Star, David Roback died February 25, 2020 in Los Angeles as a result of cancer at the age of 61.

Before founding Mazzy Star; Roback was a part of Rain Parade and Opal. While with Mazzy Star, Roback played the guitar, keyboards, and piano; as well as, writing and producing most of the band’s music.

He was born David Edward Roback on April 4, 1958 in Los Angeles, California. In his 20’s Roback became a part of the musical confederation the Paisley Underground.

Mazzy Star was David Roback and Hope Sandoval. Formed in the 80’s, the duo has since influenced current contemporary artists including Lana Del Rey and The xx.

Roback’s music appears in some three dozen productions including “Foxfire”, “Starship Troopers”, “The Sopranos”, “Best Laid Plans”, “Charmed”, “Clean”, “Cold Case”, “CSI: NY”, “End of Watch”, “True Blood”, “Gypsy” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”.

Not concerned with fame, Roback once said, “It doesn’t matter how well our records do. None of that matters, because we’re completely free.”

Roback is survived by his wife Hedi Raikam.
