Long known as a Canadian musician, Neil Young can now call himself an American citizen.

On January 22, Young and wife Daryl Hannah received the official naturalization papers at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Young retains his Canadian citizenship.

A normally long drawn out process, Young’s path to American citizenship took even longer due to the provision in the immigration application that requires “good moral character”. Young has freely admitted that he is a marijuana smoker.

Reporting that he was happy to say he was in, Young posted a video on Instagram with him waving small U.S. and Canadian flags while singing “I’m proud to be a Canarican” (to the tune of “God Bless the U.S.A.).

In 1966, Neil Young crossed the border to the United States in a Pontiac hearse…illegally.
