Martinsville Speedway is a half mile track shaped like a paperclip and it brings a lot of excitement as the drivers beat and bang each other for position on the track.

It’s race one in the round of eight for the Monster Energy Cup Series with the Fast Data 500.

Shortly before Monster Cup practice was to begin on Saturday morning, Matt Tifft fell ill and after a visit to the infield care center, and was then sent to a local hospital where he was treated and released. Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Matt Crafton will be taking over the driving duties for Tifft this weekend.

Chase Elliott’s team had to change the engine in Elliott’s car; as a result, he will have to start the race from the back of the field. Chase Elliott had a good enough time at 19.38 seconds to start second.

After single car qualifying, with a speed of 19.354 seconds, Denny Hamlin wins the pole for his 33rd career pole.

Stages one and two of the race are 130 laps each with stage three lasting 240 laps for a total of 500 laps around the half mile track. With a fuel load of around 145 laps, the drivers can complete stages one and two on a single fuel load but will have to make a pit stop in stage three.

An overnight rain has washed all of the rubber put down during practice and the Truck Series race on Saturday.

Lap 18, the field has caught up to leader Denny Hamlin.

Lap 27, Denny Hamlin has pulled out to a lead of over a second and a half.

Although it is autumn, it is a hot day in Martinsville and could cause issues for the drivers.

NASCAR puts out the caution flag on lap 30 for debris on the track after some bumping on the track.

The field comes down pit road for service and fresh tires. Each team is allotted only eight sets of tires for the race.

Lap 51, Chase Elliott is reporting that the temperatures are getting high in his engine. Elliott started the race from the back of the field after his team had to change an engine during practice.

Lap 60, Martin Truex Jr has a lead of a second and a half on Denny Hamlin with Ryan Blaney in third over two seconds back.

Lap 66, Martin Truex Jr has a second and a half lead on Denny Hamlin with 29 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 71, Martin Truex Jr has a lead of over a second on Denny Hamlin.

Beginning to show dominance, Martin Truex Jr has a second and a half lead on Denny Hamlin. There are 25 cars on the lead lap. Chase Elliott has moved into the top 10 in tenth place.

As stage one nears an end, Martin Truex Jr has dominated the race since taking the lead after the caution flag on lap 30.

Lap 195, Chase Elliott takes his car to the garage to continue making repairs. While teams can no longer make repairs in the garage after a crash, they are still allowed to make any mechanical repairs in the garage.

Lap 242, after encountering traffic, Ryan Blaney has closed to within half a second of leader Martin Truex Jr.

Lap 249, Clint Bowyer comes down pit road with a flat tire. The team changed the left side tires but it was the right rear tire that was flat and Bowyer had to make a second trip down pit road but before he can make it, the caution flag comes out on lap 252.

The drivers come down pit road for service; several drivers are reporting loose or free conditions.

The caution flag comes out with 29 laps to go when Michael McDowell and Daniel Hemric make contact on the track.
