The words it takes one to know one have long been used in taunting, but it can also be used to describe a person who has gone through some life changing event and now understands what others in the same situation are feeling.
Award winning entertainer Rachael Sage has released a new single “Bravery’s on Fire” with all of the proceeds from the song going toward research of cancers in women.
Rachael isn’t just donating funds because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month but because she has been there and knows what is to go through treatment for cancer and life on the other side. Last year Rachael was diagnosed with endometrial (uterine) cancer. Now in full remission, Rachael is paying it forward by donating money made from “Bravery’s on Fire” to the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
The song was written while Rachael was undergoing her treatment. Speaking on the song Rachael said, “the song is about finding the courage to admit one’s own vulnerability and fragility –– which can be very challenging for anyone, let alone a performer, to embrace.”
With a new lease on life Rachael says, “having cancer has reminded me to take absolutely nothing for granted. It is an indescribable privilege to wake up every morning, stretch my legs and decide what to do with my day. I hope to continue to create work that uplifts and empowers others in any way I possibly can. Having come through such an unexpectedly dark time, I’ve certainly heard the wake-up call to be as appreciative and present as possible in my own life. I was very lucky to have wonderful doctors and the support of close friends and an unconditionally loving family, and if there is a silver lining in all of this, it’s that I have a much deeper relationship to gratitude.”
Rachael and her band The Sequins will be performing a couple of benefit concerts this month:
Oct 12 at NOW Yoga
Oct 29 at the Rockwood Music Hall for the official release party for “Bravery’s on Fire”.
