Last week the Monster Energy Cup Series ran at the circuit’s largest track in Talladega; this week they run at the smallest with the First Data 500 from Martinsville Speedway.

From now until the final race in Homestead, any playoff driver that wins a race will be one of the final four drivers in the championship race.

During the first round of qualifying, Bubba Wallace slammed the wall from the driver’s side and caused significant damage to his car. He will have to start the race from the back of the field in a backup car.

Jimmie Johnson and AJ Allmendinger had their qualifying runs interrupted as a result of Bubba Wallace’s wreck.

Forty teams brought cars to Martinsville; all 40 will run in the race.

After three rounds of qualifying Kyle Busch puts his number 18 M&Ms car on the pole and will bring the field down to the green flag.

Stages one and two of the race are 130 laps each with stage three lasting 240 laps for a total of 500 laps around the half mile track.

The shortest track in the NASCAR circuit, Martinsville is also the oldest track in NASCAR with the first Cup race being run in 1949.

Lap 20, Denny Hamlin has closed the gap to leader Kyle Busch to just three quarters of a second.

Lap 30, Kyle Busch is still in the lead but second place driver Denny Hamlin is on his bumper; Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, and Aric Almirola round out the top five.

Lap 31, Denny Hamlin gets around Kyle Bus h for the lead.

Lap 36, Denny Hamlin has pulled out to a lead of nearly a second on Clint Bowyer with Kyle Busch in third.

Lap 38, the top five are Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Aric Almirola, and Kurt Busch.

There are 33 cars on the lead lap, with all 40 drivers on the track.

The caution flag comes out on lap 73 when Jimmie Johnson had some brake issues. Some of the drivers come down pit road for service but the teams only have nine sets of tires cor the entire race.

Lap 99, Kyle Busch holds on to the lead with Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five.

Lap 108, After starting from the back of the field, Martin Truex Jr has moved up 19 positions.

Lap 117, Denny Hamlin finally gets around Kyle Busch to the over the lead of the race.

Lap 121 the top five are Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, and Kurt Busch.
