Niagara Falls has long been known as the Honeymoon Capital of the World. On June 23 the area sought to also claim the title as the owners of a Guinness Book of World Records when they attempted to gather the largest number of couples to renew their wedding vows at the same time.
While sponsored by the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, organizers stated that it was a community event .
Former Buffalo Bill and NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith served as the officiate for the event.
Attendees came attired in everything from T-shirts and flip flops to formal wedding dress with some brides wearing their original wedding dresses. One couple came dressed as Peanut Butter and Jelly. There were guys wearing kilts and even a Knight’s Templar.

The old record was set at Western Michigan University in 2016 when 1,201 couples gathered to set the record.
Casino workers began registering couple from across the area and the nation at 1pm for the 5pm ceremony. The couples began gathering outside on Fourth Street in front of the Casino at 4pm. And while some 1,800 couples had registered – more than enough to break the record – only about half of them actually participated in the renewing of the vows; thus falling short of a new world record.
Despite the disappointment of not setting the record, couples had a good time, with many stating that they would do it all over again.
Missing their eleventh wedding anniversary because her husband was in the hospital, one wife enlisted the help of a friend to surprise her husband with participating in the renewing the vows ceremony.
Participants in the event received a certificate, a T-shirt, and a free ticket for the Thunder Falls Buffet.
