I live in a tourist town. Needless to say, during tourist season I frequently drop tidbits of information about the area.
And a good bit of the time the people don’t really pay any attention, so it just goes to show that the historical facts and such about Niagara Falls, Goat Island, and the surrounding areas don’t really matter to the tourists; they just came to see the big water!
Goat Island got its name when a gentleman farmer used the island to house his livestock to protect them from predators. One year there was a particularly harsh winter and the farmer could not get across to the island to tend his livestock. When the farmer could again get over to the island, he discovered that all of his livestock had died save one stubborn old goat!
That and a $10 bill might get you a cup of coffee at Starbuck’s but other than that, it isn’t worth anything.
Luna Island got its name because of the way the moon shined on the island. It was a popular spot for lovers and newlyweds. The small falls that separates Luna Island and Goat Island is called the Bridal Veil Falls.
At one time Niagara Falls was known as the honeymoon capital of the world.
Besides the endless list of musical trivia and such scrambled in my head…
I know how the Hard Rock Cafe got started including all the memorabilia on the walls.
One of the drivers for the Clydesdale horses is a member of the Seneca Nation.
Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest State Park in the United States.
The rocks used to build the little hut for the elevator at Cave of the Winds came from the shaft built for the elevator.
The flag on display at the Old Fort of Niagara Museum was found in the attic of a home and dates back to 1813.
And wouldn’t you know, when I need to come up with this stuff, my mind is a blank!
