Appearing in a play he co-wrote with James Glossman, Tom Hanks debuted “This World of Tomorrow” in 2025 in the Off-Broadway venue The Shed.
Next year, he will make a long awaited return to Broadway as he and Kelli O’Hara reprise their roles on the Broadway stage next fall.
The play has the Academy Award winning Hanks as scientist Bert Allenberry travelling back in time to 1939 and the New York World’s Fair where he meets Carmen and falls in love.
Speaking on the play and its themes Hanks said, “if they hadn’t gone to the World’s Fair in 1939, they would not have met the great love of their life. And I’m going to tell you right now, even you have moments like that in your life. That’s the study of history. And I have always been fascinated by that odd aspect of human behavior that says: Things only happen when you’re in the right place at the right time, and you have no idea if you are in the right place or if the time is right to be there—history just sort of decides that for you. And I think that’s fascinating.”
Also reprising his role is the Tony winning director Kenny Leon who said, “I’m so excited to continue this work on this amazing new American play. There’s no time like the present to further explore this story of love and time travel from Glossman and Hanks. More than anything, I look forward to even more audiences who will have the chance to witness the onstage chemistry of Kelli O’Hara and Tom Hanks.”
