What’s the best online course you’ve ever taken?

Admittedly, I have not done a great deal of online learning.

When I was in college, it wasn’t even a thing yet.

But I have taken advantage of a couple of things…

There is this place called Hillside College and they offered a free course on the History of Music. Oh yeah, sign me up!

It was very interesting. I really like this stuff!

It literally began at the beginning of how music came into being; something I had never heard before.

I need to try and find it again to help log it into my brain.

There is also a site called True Fire. It is a site that has literally thousands of music lessons; primarily for guitar and bass. There are dozens of different instructors, some of them famous musicians.

I have found some very interesting lessons on the site; but my only complaint is that they focus so much on chords and not the notes and music.

I really need to find the time to delve into some of the stuff more and just skip over the chordal parts.

The really nice thing about courses like these is that a person can fit them to their own schedules and not be so constrained with time. And when it comes to music lessons, you can spend as much time as you need to master a skill or song; move at your own pace.

True Fire also offers some live events where people can ask questions and interact with the host.

the new trend of online learning has its pros and cons like anything else…
it’s easy to pass it off and say, I’ll do it later and later never comes
if you have questions or need help, it can be more difficult that an in person class
the schedules are often flexible; allowing students to learn on their own time and schedule
and people can slow down or speed up the classes to suit their own pace. Repeat classes that are more difficult or move ahead when classes are less difficult

Online learning does require a bit of discipline to stay on top of classes and assignments; which can sometimes be difficult for some people. Procrastination can be a powerful incentive!
