Yiddish folklore is filled with stories about people they call a “Mensch”.

While the word itself is Yiddish, it comes from the German mensch – a human being. But the Yiddish mensch takes it a step further to mean “a good honourable person”.

I know what a mensch is, but I have difficulty in putting it in words. I can point out a person who is a mensch, but actually describing it is the hard part; so I asked Co-pilot for a little help…

According to Co-pilot a “Mensch” is a person of integrity, honour, decency, and responsibility – a high compliment.

Co-pilot goes on to say:
A mensch is someone who:
Does the right thing even when it’s difficult.
Treats others with kindness and respect.
Is dependable and trustworthy.
Shows humility and good character.

I would add that a “Mensch” – a good person – is also someone who does these good deeds without bragging and calling attention to themselves and the deeds that they do.

A prime example of the exact opposite of a good person is the current administration in Washington, D.C. It is filled with people who are constantly waving at cameras shouting “look at me” and “how great I am” all the while spreading lies.
