With the closure of the Kennedy Center, the Kennedy Center Honors will break tradition of holding the annual ceremonies at the icon Performing Arts Center and instead hold the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Capital One Arena in downtown Washington, D.C.

No further details about a performance date or when the 2026 Honors recipients will be named.

This year will mark the 49th annual presentation of the Kennedy Center Honors – an award that pays tribute to artists across the world of entertainment for their work on the stage and philanthropic endeavours.

Currently, the Kennedy Center is surrounded by fencing as the discussion goes on as to what should be done with the building.

The United States Congress named the Performing Arts Center after President John F. Kennedy in 1964, shortly after he was assassinated in Dallas in November 1963 as a living memorial.

One of the biggest contentions over the Kennedy Center is the name on the building; the law prohibits any changes to the name on the Kennedy Center.
