Between practice and qualifying, nearly half of the Craftsman Truck Series drivers had some sort of trouble on the track from scraping barriers and getting some cosmetic damage to a complete crash with a fire that will require a backup truck.

The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series drivers are next to take on the 3.4 mile street course at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego for the United Rentals Driven to Serve 250.

Thirty-seven teams brought cars to Coronado for 38 starting spots including a few “road course ringers”.

The drivers get a full 50 minute practice session.  Qualifying will be on Saturday morning before the race on Saturday afternoon.

Brandon Jones is the first driver to have an on course incident just a few minutes into practice and brings out the caution flag.  He dropped some fluid on the track and is now stopped on the track.

There is an extended caution while crews make some repairs to the wall.

Corey Day gets wide and into the wall.  He limps his number 17 car back to pit road.

Parker Kligerman described a practice session as the drivers being Christopher Columbus – just trying to figure out what’s out there.

Jeremy Clements becomes the Iron Man of NASCAR when he has O’Reilly Auto Parts Series start number 548 on Saturday.

Several of the drivers are using the only practice session to “feel out” the track and get a better feel for the course instead of going all out and crashing the cars.

Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing have pulled out backup cars for Corey Day and Brandon Jones after on track incidents during practice.

Austin Green tops the leaderboard in practice with a single lap time of 315.503 seconds.

After some Friday afternoon practice, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series takes to the track on a Saturday morning for qualifying to set the field for the race later in the afternoon.

After running the course last night in the Truck Series, Parker Kligerman calls the course one of the most treacherous in NASCAR.  On Friday, only four of the 35 trucks evaded any issues with their trucks between practice, qualifying, and the race.

Jesse Love’s number two car is under penalty for a lug nut issue.  NASCAR dictates the size of the lug nuts and officials deemed the lug nuts on the number two car too narrow.  As a result he will have to start the race from the back of the field and serve a passthrough penalty upon race start.  He is not making a qualifying run.

Naval officer Jesse Iwuji is in the race today.

The drivers have been divided into two groups for 20 minute qualifying sessions.

With a time of 134.294 seconds Brent Crews puts his number 19 car on the pole with Parker Retzlaff alongside on the front row.  This is  the teenager’s first career pole.

Justin Allgaier will have to start from the back of the field after the crew had to make some repairs after some damage during qualifying this morning.

Rajah Caruth noted that today’s race is a story of the tortoise and the hare – not necessarily the fastest driver but the smartest driver.

Stages one and two of the race are just 15 laps each with stage three lasting 30 laps for a total of 60 laps around the 3.4 mile course.

Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Breese gave a rouding command to start the engines.

Brent Crews brings the field down for the green flag start of the race with Parker Retzlaff alongside before a sell out crowd.  Brent Crews jumps out in front for the lead and pulls away from the field.

The caution flag comes out for fluid on the track on lap one.  Corey Day said that he ran over something and there is debris in his grille.  A manhole cover went through the front grille and ruptured the radiator.

All of the manhole covers were sealed but after two days of race cars and trucks, one of them came loose…and found Corey Day’s front end.

After starting the race from the back of the field, Justin Allgaier has worked his way up to 26th.

There is an extended caution while crews work on replacing the errant manhole cover.

Lap six, NASCAR has displayed the red flag in order for the crews to check all the manhole covers.  NASCAR has deemed that Corey Day can continue to work on his car; normally a red flag means crews are not allowed to touch the cars.

Jesse Love is taking advantage of the red flag and is taking a nap in his car.

Corey Day’s car has been repaired and is ready to go again and is listed at four laps down; however, NASCAR has announced that Corey Day will be given his laps back and is listed on the lead lap but he has to make the laps in order to balance out the tire wear.

After a red flag of around 20 minutes, the cars are moving again.  Some drivers are coming down pit road for service including a rear shock change.

William Sawalich is reporting a starter issue.

Brent Crews brings the field down for the green flag restart with Parker Retzlaff alongside on lap 10.  Crews edges out in front as the drivers get three and four wide.

The top five are Brent Crews, Parker Retzlaff, Anthony Alfredo, Austin Hill, and Sam Mayer.

Austin Green and Sheldon Creed make contact but the track stays green.

Sam Mayer passes Anthony Alfredo for fourth.

Lap eleven, Brent Crews has pulled out to a one second lead on Parker Retzlaff.

A few more drivers come down to flip the stage including Corey Day who was caught speeding on pit road.  Ryan Sieg was charged with crew members coming over the wall too soon.

After short pitting at the end of stage one, Brent Crews has worked his way to fifth place.

Taylor Gray is the new leader.

With 16 cars staying out on the track, Taylor Gray brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 26 with Parker Retzlaff alongside.  Drivers are three and four wide going into turn one.  Gray takes the lead with Parker Retzlaff in second; Anthony Alfredo, Corey Day, and Ryan Ellis rounding out the top five.

With five laps remaining in stage two, the drivers are getting very aggressive.

Justin Allgaier spins out again but get moving again.

A big crash in turn one brings out the caution flag.  Twenty cars were involved including Alex Labbe, Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith William Sawalich, Brent Crews, Brandon Jones, Austin Hill, Harrison Burton, Dean Thompson, Jeb Burton, Blaine Perkins, Andrew Patterson, Brennan Poole, Preston Pardus, Jeremy Clements, Brad Perez, Leland Honeyman, and Anthony Alfredo when Sam Mayer hits the inside wall and launches across the track to hit the outside wall head on.  The radiator of Mayer’s car was laying on the course.

NASCAR has red flagged the race while crews repair the fence and wall.

Sam Mayer is out of the infield care center and says that he is fine.  He had a heartfelt apology for everyone involved in the crash.  He noted the visuals are hard on the course.  He said that he just a little too aggressive.  He noted that he will have to go around the garage apologizing to everyone.

Jamie McMurray said that there are far more drivers involved in incidents this weekend than those that were not.  He called Sam Mayer a really good kid: Mayer is 22 years old.  Adding that Mayer is being too hard on himself.

Out of the care center, William Sawalich said that there was just no where to go.

There are only six drivers who have not had any kind of issue today.

Anthony Allfredo said that was the hardest hit he has ever had.  He noted it was one of the best cars he had ever driven. 

Somehow a fan got out on the course and was at Sheldon Creed’s car.  He ran back across the course and jumped two fences to get back off the course.

NASCAR has called 7:45 local time as the adverse conditions time for beginning the process of ending the race.

At 5:33pm local time, the engines have fired and the drivers are moving.  NASCAR has opened pit road for all drivers.

Lavar Scott is back in the race, 12 laps down.

Andrew Patterson spins out and is stopped on the track but gets moving again and the track stays green.

Twenty to go, the seventh caution flag comes out for tire bundles in the racing course in the chicane.

Parker Retzlaff runs out of fuel during the caution and is stopped on the track.

Drivers come down pit road for service with Harrison Burton the first driver off of pit road after taking fuel only.  Having just pitted, Taylor Gray stays out on the track.  Blaine Perkins and Preston Pardus also stayed out on the track.

A very excited Austin Hill finally wins his first road course race in a red, white, and blue painted car.

This is the first win for Richard Childress Racing since the death of Kyle Busch last month.  Austin Hill does a burnout next to the big eight painted on the ground.  He burned out his rear tires and needs help getting to victory lane. 

He said the last few laps he was talking to Kyle Busch, asking for help..
