The Cup Series drivers get ready for The Great American Getaway 400 at “The Tricky Triangle” of Pocono Raceway with a practice session and qualifying run before the race on Sunday.
The 2.5 mile three cornered track provides plenty of challenge for the drivers with three completely different corners taken from three distinct tracks.
While weather is blue skies and warm temperatures on Saturday; the weather may be an issue on Sunday. With that in mind, NASCAR has moved the start time of the race to 1pm from its original 3pm start time.
Thirty-eight teams brought cars to Pocono for 40 starting spots.
After one of the hardest hits in the Next Gen car last week, Christopher Bell suffered a fractured left wrist. He has since been cleared to race. The crew has worked all week to make the car interior as comfortable for Bell as possible, moving some switches to the right side or making adjustments to pull tabs so that he can reach them with his right hand if needed. He will also have a crew member helping getting in and out of the car; as well as, connecting and tightening seat belts and other connections in the car.
Kyle Larson’s number five car and Daniel Dye’s number 78 car have failed the pre-race inspection process twice; as a result both teams have lost a crew member for the remainder of the weekend and will have their pit stall selections assigned to them by NASCAR officials.
The drivers have been divided into two groups for practice with 25 minutes each.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr spun out in practice in a cloud of smoke but kept the car off of the wall.
Points leader Tyler Reddick topped the leaderboard in single laps times at the end of group one practice with a time of 53.302 seconds. Reddick also topped the list in multiple lap times.
Kyle Larson tops the leaderboard in single lap times from group two with a time of 52.722 seconds. Larson also tops the leaderboard in multiple lap times.
The first driver on the track to make a qualifying run is Casey Mears who posted a time of 54.212 seconds around the 2.5 mile track
Brad Keselowski reports that he is short on cylinders. His lap time was over one minute. He took his car straight to the garage.
Carson Hocevar spins out and gets into the wall.
Bubba Wallace gets into the wall and slides sideways down the track and hits the inside wall.
With a time of 51.948 seconds, Denny Hamlin puts his number eleven car on the pole once again with Kyle Larson alongside on the front row.

After some issues during qualifying, Brad Keselowski announced that they found some debris in the engine box.
NASCAR revealed that Christopher Bell’s crash last week at Michigan was the hardest hit ever in the Next Gen car. Bell does not expect to need to exit the car; however, if he does, Brandon Jones is on standby.
Stage one is just 30 laps with stages two and three lasting 65 laps. The drivers will have to make at least one pit stop during stages two and three.
“Benjamin Franklin and Betsy Ross” gave the command to start engines.

Lap 18, Kyle Larson’s lead is down to one second over Denny Hamlin; Ty Gibbs is making a run for Danial Suarez and third place.
Lap 20, Ty Gibbs passes Daniel Suarez for third; Kyle Larson’s lead is now just over half a second on Denny Hamlin.
