While the White House celebrates the birthday of a leader with a fight, the Royalty in Great Britain celebrates the birthday of a leader by recognizing the contributions and work of its citizens by issuing royal honours.

As a part of King Charles birthday honours, award winning actress Helen Mirren with one of the highest awards that can be given to a member of the British commonwealth – the “Companion of Honour” for her contributions to drama.  The Honour can be held by only 65 people at any given time.  A new member can only be added when an existing member dies.

Other members of the “Companion of Honour” include David Attenborough, Margaret Atwood, and former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Honours are presented twice each year – for the New Year and the King/Queen’s birthday.

Nearly 1,200 Brittons were presented with honours on King Charles Birthday Honours.

The “Companion of Honour” was established by King George V in 1917 and “recognizes people who have made “a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government” over an extended time period.”

British author Julia Donaldson was knighted – women referred to as Dame.  Speaking on the honour Donaldson said “receiving this honor has been a very happy surprise. It’s really gratifying to have children’s books recognized in this way.”

Rugby player and fundraiser Kevin Sinfield was knighted.

Two time Ryder Cup winning captain Luke Donald was given the Order of the British Empire.

Women’s footballer Chloe Kelly and six of her teammates will become a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi is now a Member of the British Empire for his contributions to music.

Actress Lisa Riley was made a Member of the British Empire for her contributions to drama.

Animation studio founders David Sproxton and Peter Lord were knighted for their contributions to creative industries and to charity.
