Rumours have circulated about a new album or a tribute album ever since Eddie van Halen’s death in 2020.

Nearly seven years later, those rumours are coming true with brother Alex and Steve Lukather of Toto have begun the work on creating a tribute album using previously unreleased material in what is being described as “very emotional”.

Lukather and van Halen told “Guitar World” that the as yet completed album “is a heartfelt sendoff to the legendary guitarist.”

Adding that “the project is not about commercial gain, but about “love of the guys.”

Knowing that Steve Lukather and Eddie were longtime friends, Alex personally asked Lukather to help with the album.

An iconic guitarist of note, Lukather has admitted he is not playing a single chord on the upcoming album; saying “these are finished tracks with Ed and Al and Ed’s playing bass on a lot of it. That’s all I can say right now because it’s a much bigger picture, and it’s Alex’s story to tell.”

Speaking on the music in the album Lukather said, “if you think this is a bunch of throwaway crap that we’re trying to Mickey Mouse together to suck the dollar out of poor, unsuspecting Van Halen fans, it’s not.”

Reportedly the album is nearly complete but an official release date has not yet been announced.
