When “American Bandstand” was on the air, they used to have a “rate-a-record” segment where they would play a new single and the two people chosen to “rate” the record were supposed to tell host Dick Clark what they thought. The favourite response was always, “it has a goo beat and it’s easy to dance to”.
Well, that’s me; I want a good beat to groove to. These days most of my “dancing” is done in the form of chair-dancing but I’m still moving.
When music comes on, I begin to move. It’s an automatic thing.
But there are a few tunes that will get me really going and want to crank up the sound…
…and Mr. Santana tops that list with “Smooth”. I have seen him live twice. I have never heard it so loud in the Events Center at the Seneca Niagara Casino as it was when he played that song. Holy cow was it LOUD!!! Everybody in the house was on their feet, dancing, and singing at the top of their lungs!
As a rule, music in general can put me in a pretty good state of mind. There are a few songs that will have me crying for one reason or another; but normally, music is my thing.
I love percussion and good rhythms. That’s “New York City Rhythm” by Barry Manilow.
Growing up in a Classical household, one of my favourite pieces is the “Moonlight Sonata”. Often, I have to just stop and listen to the piece.
And then there is my new obsession…”Live from Daryl’s House”! Not only do I love the music; but as a musician and someone who loves learning theory and how things are done, there are plenty of opportunities in his videos. The shows with Kenny Loggins and Todd Rundgrin are my favourites. There is a show with Todd from Todd’s house in Hawaii and on the song “Didn’t I”, they change keys about half a dozen times. It’s really interesting to listen to it and how they work the changes.
