After the fire that damaged part of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on May, “The Book of Mormon” had planned to reopen the show on May 21; however, the musical will stay dark a little longer as repairs are taking longer than expected. 

The new opening date is May 27

Theatre owners ATG Entertainment issued a statement saying they, “were encouraged by the speed of initial work in the theatre…recovery took longer than expected this past weekend.”

Theatre fans wishing to purchase tickets for “The Book of Mormon” can now do so at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre box office.

In the early hours of May 4 a three alarm fire broke out in the upper floors of the O’Neill Theatre that was classified as a three alarm fire by the New York City Fire Department.  In addition to the fire damage, there is some smoke and water damage to the building.  The fire broke out between the fourth and fifth floors of the building in the “Spotlight” room where electrical equipment is stored.

ATG Entertainment and “The Book of Mormon” have issued a joint statement saying, “ATG Entertainment, who are the owners and operators of the O’Neill, and ‘The Book of Mormon’ are extremely grateful to the FDNY and the Department of Buildings for their help and cooperation throughout the repair efforts.”

While “The Book of Mormon” in anxiously waiting to restart the show after the theatre is repaired; the musical “Beaches” is having some difficulty in filling the house.  Originally scheduled to run through September 6, the show is giving its final performance on May 24.

The Tony Award nominee announcements usually help to boost audience attendance; however, “Beaches” failed to earn any nominations at the Tony Award announcemnts May 5.

When it closes, “Beaches” will have run 28 previews and 38 performances.

The musical “Death Becomes Her” tells the story of two rivals who partake a magic potion that makes them young again but comes with some “dirty side effects”.

The show is set to close on June 28.
