What’s a classic book that you think is overrated?

There is (or was?) a comic strip in the newspaper called “Jumpstart”. Dad was a policeman, mom was a nurse, and a little girl named Sunny. Another kid came along later.

One day in the comic strip dad was going to read a fairy tale to Sunny and asked Sunny which one she wanted by describing it as a crime.

That got me to thinking; some of the biggest stories adults tell and read to children are actually crime stories.

What are we teaching these children???

For example, Goldilocks performs a little B&E when she breaks into the bear family’s home

In “The Three Little Pigs”, the wolf essentially commits murder when he destroys the first two pig homes.

We have wicked queens plotting to murder the princess, wicked step-mothers plotting fraud and enslavement.

Pick a so-called children’s fairy tale and there’s a really good chance a crime is a part of the story.

Not exactly the kind of thing we should be teaching small children…bad values. And then we wonder why the kids go out and commit crimes???

Surely there has to be some children’s tales that instill some good qualities for the child.
