What’s a job you would like to do for just one day?
Once a year my friend takes me out on his boat and lets me drive. I always love it and wish it could last longer.
But a job that would love to try is driving that huge Maid of the Mist boat!
I remember the first time I went out on the boat. It was a bit of a rainy day and I decided that if I was going to get wet, then I was going to have a good reason.
Over the years, I have been on the Maid of the Mist boat several times – I can’t remember how many – and always enjoy the ride. The view doesn’t impress me as much any more but the whole view and the ride itself is always a big pleasure.
One time when I went on the boat and I was one of the last people off the boat. The captain came out of the pilot house and asked me about my ride. When he saw how much I loved just being on the boat he told me to stay and I got a free ride!
A couple of years ago, the people who own the Maid of the Mist boat upgraded to a new electric boat. The peacefulness of the ride is incredible. No more loud diesel engine that drowns out the birds and even to some extent the sound of the Falls themselves. You can even hear the recording that describes the area and events in both English and French.
The captain of the Maid of the Mist boat is a lady.
But I think it would be awesome to spend a day behind the wheel of that magnificent boat.
But then again, I will get behind the wheel of any boat given the chance. I got to steer the rudder of a sailboat on a group ride once. The guy asked if anybody wanted to drive and I was the only one! :).
My biggest so far is my friend’s 41 foot Fountain.
