Alan Osmond – the oldest of the singing family members – died April 20, 2026 in his Lehi, Utah home at the age of 76 as a result of a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Osmond was surrounded by family at the time of his death.
Named the “leader” of the singing brothers when he was just eight years old, Osmond later penned some of the group’s biggest hit songs.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, George and Olive Osmond had a large family of eight boys and one girl. Alan Ralph Osmond was the third child born to the family in Ogden, Utah on June 22, 1949.
He and brother Wayne, Merrill, and Jay began their musical careers as a barbershop quartet. In the sixties they became regulars on the “Andy Williams Show” where they also debuted a very young but vivacious little brother who stole the show – Donny.
In 1971, the singing brothers had amassed nine gold records – more than Elvis and The Beatles – for a single year in hits.
Alan later became the producer for “The Donny and Marie Show” starring brother Donny and sister Marie.
The original quartet reunited in the 80’s and had a few hits on the Country music chart. Alan noted, “Country music really is the backbone of America. It doesn’t just come and go. And we’re kind of flag-wavers. You find that in the country area, too.”
Alan retired from performing in 1987 after being diagnoses with multiple sclerosis.
Son Doug spoke on his father saying, “he is my hero. I’ve never met anyone more positive in my life. I never once heard him complain, not once. He would say, ‘I may have MS, but MS does not have me.’ That was his motto and he always was worried about everyone else. … Family always took priority and his faith was in everything he did.”
Predeceased by brother Wayne who died in 2025 from a stroke; Alan is survived by his wife of over 50 years Suzanne, eight sons – Michael, Nathan, Doug, David, Scott, Jon, Alex, and Tyle -, 30 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, siblings – Virl, Tom, Merrill, Jay, Donny, Jimmy, and Marie -, and many nieces and nephews.
